the business of life Engaging Students Top tips from YEMs: - Patience - Adaptability - Communication – students, teachers - Be there!!!

Be excited and committed Your drive and passion will motivate the students Show true enthusiasm in the business and their work Do not let your interest flag – Expect highs and lows in the year – Expect a lack of student motivation at points Be confident Communicate that they are worth your time Be friendly - use first names Talk to them about their individual interests Share (limited) personal information with them

Be a good role model Be fair Greet them with handshakes Treat them as adults, with respect Communicate any non-attendance with both CL and students – drop them a line even on off-weeks! Use examples from your own experience Avoid any use of ethnic or gender stereotypes Be honest if you do not know something Believe that they can succeed

Be clear and set the scene Students need to understand what they are trying to achieve – helping them set goals can aid this… – SMART goals (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, time- bound) Set a professional yet relaxed environment – Think of the lay-out of the room – No distractions (e.g. phones – students or BAs!) Give clear and concise information – Repeat it – Think about different ways to give information – Avoid lecturing

Encourage ownership It is their business. They need to feel safe to suggest and try out new ideas Avoid criticising or rejecting bad suggestions – Guide them to alternative ideas Encourage them to think for and express themselves Give feedback continuously Encourage and ask questions – Value all students’ responses – Compliment them on their answers

Discipline Students know the school rules Leave discipline to the teacher If students are being disruptive, go stand by them – This sends them a direct message to stop what they are doing Respect the teacher’s authority and expertise

Above all… Have fun Enjoy the experience Develop your own skills Remember, further guidance is available on YE Online Remember – even if the company is not a great commercial success, it still provides an excellent learning experience for everyone involved

the business of life Recognition

A new facility on YE Online has been introduced to allow CLs and BAs to record the activities and time spent supporting the students throughout the year. Centre Lead and Business Adviser Recognition

At the end of the Programme CLs and BAs are able to download a certificate of recognition detailing their contributions together with the progression that the students made against the 8 key competencies. This highlights their contribution towards the students’ achievements and can be used as part of their performance management in school. This facility has been made available in response to a request from the Centre Lead advisory group.
