Cover vs. motivation letter The motivation letter is usually used when applying for something e.g. for acceptance to a university, to a student programme, to a non-profit organization for voluntary work etc. You have to explain why you are interested in the specific activity, your motives, why you want to study or attend the programme, why you choose the specific university or programme etc. http://ecs.ihu.edu.gr/co/employment-business-letters/example- motivation-letter http://ecs.ihu.edu.gr/co/employment-business-letters/example- motivation-letter The cover letter is used when you apply for a job. You send both a letter and your detailed CV. In the cover letter, you must state clearly the position you are applying for and explain why your profile matches the position. To put it simply, it must answer the question ‘’Why you?’’ http://ecs.ihu.edu.gr/content/cover-letter-samples

Resume vs. CV What is the difference between a curriculum vitae (CV) and a resume?  The primary differences between a resume and a CV are the length, what is included and what each is used for. A resume is a one or two page summary of your skills, experience and education. While a resume is brief and concise, a curriculum vitae is a longer (at least two pages) and more detailed synopsis. A CV includes a summary of your educational backgrounds as well as publications, presentations, awards etc. In Europe, the Middle East, Africa, or Asia, employers may expect to receive a curriculum vitae. In the United States, a curriculum vitae is used primarily when applying for academic, education, scientific or research positions. It is also applicable when applying for fellowships or grants.

CV writing tips. I Get the basics right  There is no right or wrong way to write a CV but there are some common sections you should cover. These include: personal and contact information; education and qualifications; work history and/or experience; relevant skills to the job in question; own interests, achievements or hobbies; and some references. Presentation is key  The layout should always be clean and well structured.  Always remember the CV hotspot – the upper middle area of the first page is where the recruiter's eye will naturally fall, so make sure you include your most important information as well as your own picture there.

CV writing tips. II Understand the job description  The clues are in the job application, so read the details from start to finish. Take notes and create bullet points, highlighting everything you can satisfy and all the bits you can't. With the areas where you're lacking, fill in the blanks by adapting the skills you do have. It will demonstrate the skills you do have and show how they're transferable. Presentation is key  When you've established what the job entails and how you can match each requirement, create a CV specifically for that role. Remember, there is no such thing as a generic CV. Every CV you send to a potential employee should be tailored to that role so don't be lazy and hope that a general CV will work because it won't.  Create a unique CV for every job you apply for. You don't have to re- write the whole thing, just adapt the details so they're relevant.

CV writing tips. III Making the most of interests  Under interests, highlight the things that show off skills you've gained and employers look for. Describe any examples of positions of responsibility, working in a team or anything that shows you can use your own initiative. For example, if you ran your university's newspaper or if you started a weekend league football team that became a success.  Include anything that shows how diverse, interested and skilled you are. Don't include passive interests like watching TV, solitary hobbies that can be perceived as you lacking in people skills. Make yourself sound really interesting. Making the most of experience  Use assertive and positive language under the work history and experience sections, such as "developed", "organised" or "achieved". Try to relate the skills you have learned to the job role you're applying for.  Really get to grips with the valuable skills and experience you have gained from past work positions, even if it was just an internship.

CV writing tips. IV Including references  References should be from someone who has employed you in the past and can vouch for your skills and experience. If you've never worked before you're OK to use a teacher or tutor as a referee. Try to include two if you can. Keep your CV updated  It's crucial to review your CV on a regular basis and add any new skills or experience that's missing. For example, if you've just done some volunteering or worked on a new project, make sure they're on there – potential employers are always impressed with candidates who go the extra mile to boost their own skills and experience. 15 Recommendation letters.I A recommendation letter is a written reference designed to offer information about your character and work ethic. A recommendation letter is very helpful in the working world and may help you to get the job of your dreams. Every recommendation letter should include three key components:  A paragraph or sentence that explains how you know this person and the duration of your relationship with them.  An evaluation of the person and their skills/accomplishments. If possible offer specific examples that illustrate the person’s strengths and qualifications.  A summary that explains why you would recommend this person and to what degree you would recommend them.

Recommendation letters.II The content of a recommendation letter will depend upon the needs of the person who is requesting it, but there are some common topics that should be addressed:  Potential  Skills/Abilities/Strengths  Dependability  Consistency  Good Character  Contributions (to class or community)  Accomplishments Samples:  http://ecs.ihu.edu.gr/co/employment-business- letters/recommendation-letter-samples
