3 * We use zero conditional to talk about something that is true at any time. * We use first conditional to talk about things that are possible in the future. * We use second conditional to talk about the present, and to imagine something different from the real situation. IF + PRESENT SIMPLE + FUTURE SIMPLE WILL (‘LL) IF I SEE ANN, I WILL INVITE HER. (future possibility) + (result) Если я встречу Анну, то я ее приглашу. Note that in this sentence there’s a possibility and a result. IF + PAST SIMPLE + WOULD (OR ‘D) IF HE WORKED LESS, HE’D ENJOY LIFE MORE. Если бы он меньше работал, то больше бы наслаждался жизнью.

Transform the sentences according to the model. Model: (Cats have very good eyes; that’s why they can see in the dark).- If cats didn’t have very good eyes, they wouldn’t be able to see in the dark. 1. (Bats have very good ears; that’s how they move about so easily in the dark). 2. (Dogs are able to recognize people because they have a good sense of smell). 3. We can use wish to say that we want something to be different from how it is now. NOTE! The verb after wish is in the past. Ex.: I wish (that) Chaplin was still alive. I/he/she/it with were. After if and after wish, we sometimes use I/he/she/it with were. Ex.: If he were alive today… if I were you Notice also the expression if I were you, when you give someone advice. Ex.: If I were you, I’d go to the police. Let’s practice

B. A manager tells people why they can’t have a job. Write Their thoughts with “I wish”. Model: You don’t have a driving licence, so you can’t have the j Job. – I wish I had a driving licence. 1.You can’t have the job because you don’t have good eyesight. 2.You can’t speak German, so you can’t have the job. 3.You don’t have a degree, so you can’t have the job. 4.You can’t have the job because you are not 18.

9 Again exercises!!! Use the information in brackets to complete these sentences. Model: (Sam didn’t get the job as a translator because he failed the exam). Sam would have got the job as a translator if he had not failed the exam. 1.(Alan lost our phone number, so he didn’t phone us). 2.(Sally broke her leg, so she didn’t go on holiday). 3.(We didn’t make a cake because we forgot to buy any eggs). Write sentences about these people who are sorry about things they did in the past. Model: Ian wasted time at school; now he’s sorry. Ian wished he hadn’t wasted time at school. 1.I didn’t tell him the truth; now I’m sorry. 2.John borrowed some money from his mother; now he’s sorry. 3.Vary didn’t get up early; now she’s sorry. 4.Peter didn’t go to the party; now he’s sorry. 5.I didn’t send Jill a birthday card; now I’m sorry. 6.Fiona didn’t help her sister; now she’s sorry. 7.He shouted at the children; now he’s sorry.
