AF6 What are speech marks? Speech marks are punctuation marks that show direct speech. They are also called inverted commas, because they are commas that are inverted or reversed to go around the spoken words. “ “

Rule 3. At the end each chunk of speech, always include either a . , ? or an ! “Where are we ” asked Jenny. The man shouted, “Get out of the way ” ? ! “Your country needs you ” said Uncle Sam. Uncle Sam said, “Your country needs you ” , . TIP: If your speech is at the end of your sentence, use a full stop. If it isn’t, use a comma.

Rule 5. New speaker, new line. When another character begins to speak, start a new line. NEW SPEAKER, NEW LINE! “How are you?” asked John, nervously. “I’m fine,” snapped Margaret, with a scowl. “I’m fine,” snapped Margaret, with a scowl.

Now you know the 5 golden rules of speech punctuation. Success Criteria: 1. Put “ ” around the words the speaker says. 2.
