Reading Club Eligibility Factors: Kindergarten Screening Assessment: upper/lower letter id, letter sounds and 25 Sight Words F&P Instructional Level – based on a combination of accuracy and comprehension Stanford and/or SBA scores June’s report card “Reads Grade Level Text” grade

Volume: Kids need to read a lot. Level: Kids need to feel successful. Stamina: Kids need to be able to read for 30 minutes at a time. Choice: Kids need to be interested in what they are reading. Fluency: Kids need to read smoothly and attend to punctuation. What the Research Says

Other Helpful Word Solving Strategies Are: Look at the beginning sounds and the ending sounds. Stretch out the word and put the sounds together. Look for a word chunk that you already know. Look at the pictures for clues Skip the word and come back to it after you’ve read the whole sentence. “What would make sense here?” is the new, “Sound it out.”

Other Helpful At Home Activities: Visit your local library weekly so your child can choose books of interest Encourage real world reading: street signs, cereal boxes, recipes, etc. Review High Frequency Words or Sight Words with your child nightly Play alphabet, phonics and rhyming games like I spy
