A holistic lifestyle focuses on a person’s overall wellbeing, including emotional, physical, mental, and even spiritual health. Rather than provide short-term cures, a holistic approach instead promotes lifelong positive habits. Benefits of a holistic lifestyle include: Improvement of overall general health Long-term pain relief Fostering the routine of a well-balanced lifestyle The use of safe and natural treatments, including herbs and medicines

A holistic lifestyle can help lessen or completely eradicate pain or other symptoms related to common chronic health conditions, such as: Diabetes Heart disease Asthma Cancer

One of the most beneficial aspects of a holistic lifestyle is its stress-management capabilities. Stress can have a detrimental effect on our health and wellbeing. When we are stressed, the body’s response systems don’t get the rest and repair they need to function properly. Without rest, stress can inflict wear and tear on the brain, heart, vital organs, and immune system. Holistic treatments such as meditation, social support, and spiritual practices can all have a positive effect on relieving stress and promoting overall wellbeing.

A sedentary lifestyle can severely impact our health. Exercise is important for both our physical and mental wellbeing, and has many helpful benefits. Exercise has been shown to decrease the risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and many forms of cancer. Physical activity is the best natural remedy for reducing mild to moderate depression. Even a mere thirty minutes of moderate exercise five days a week can benefit your health and boost endorphins.

One of the core pillars of a healthy lifestyle is holistic nutrition. Since a poor diet can lead to a life of chronic disease, holistic counseling uses a reverse approach. Most practitioners believe that “simple” foods are best, such as fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds for protein, and healthy fats such as avocado.

A holistic lifestyle encourages adequate sleep to promote rest and relaxation for the body and soul. Sleeplessness can be as detrimental to our health as smoking is, and comes with as many long-term consequences. Here are a few reasons why sleep matters: The body repairs itself while we sleep, in order to promote proper healing and detoxification. Sleep restores our physical and mental energy, and lack of can lead to fatigue, stress, and irritability. Adequate sleep is even more important for individuals living with chronic illness or pain. Lack of sleep in the chronically ill often exacerbates the symptoms they typically experience.

Sports nutrition is a highly-focused area of applied food concepts that examines the catalyzing role of digestive enzymes and absorption of food nutrients. This area of nutritional counseling is designed to increase a person's power, strength, and endurance during movement and activity. Sports nutrition generally believes in limiting acid-forming diets that weaken the quality of body tissue and can leave an athlete prone to injuries.

Often overlooked in traditional medicine, spirituality plays an important role in a holistic lifestyle. Spirituality pertains to the nonphysical aspects of your mind and soul, and has many facets, including: Awareness of the world around you Fostering a sense of gratitude Promoting kindness Listening to intuition A sampling of what enhances spiritual health includes meditation, yoga, music and art therapy, breathwork, laughter, and martial arts.
