Canada is a “federal state” Responsibility for governing Canada is divided between a central government (in Ottawa) and each of the Provincial Governments. Canada is a democracy Each riding elects a Member of Parliament (MP) to represent them in the House of Commons every 3-5 years. Canada is a “constitutional monarchy” Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is our Head of State. HM appoints a Governor General to exercise her powers as head of state. 402.05 – Silver StarOHP-2

Nova Scotia: First province to win responsible government through a group of “Cabinet Ministers.” 1773: Prince Edward Island elects its own assembly 1784: New Brunswick elects its own assembly. 1791: Upper and Lower Canada (present-day Ontario and Quebec) elect their own assemblies. 1832: Newfoundland elects its own assembly. 412.05 – Silver Star OHP-3
