1
The Eye Myopia & Hyperopia
2
Myopia (Shortsightedness) Myopia = Shortsightedness Can see nearby objects (eg reading) Cannot see distant objects (eg blackboard) i.e. Short - sight Why? Light rays focus in front of retina
5
Causes Genes Lack of outdoor activity Uncorrected refractive errors (eg. Wrong Correction) Poor Eye Care Too much near work Computer Reading Television
6
Complications Retinal detachment Retina separates from eye Macular degeneration Retina degenerates Cataract Opacity of lens Glaucoma Eyeball fluid pressure higher than normal
7
Correction
8
Corrected with a negative lens Lenses can be from contact lenses / glasses Other treatment: LASIK More Severe Myopia = Thicker lens LASIK, correction with a laser Contact Lenses Glasses
9
Hyperopia (Longsightedness) Similar but not to be confused with Presbyopia Able to see objects far away Unable to see objects nearby Why? Light rays travelling into eye meet beyond the retina
10
Normal Eye
11
Hyperopic Eye
12
Causes Genetic (Children are able to outgrow this as they have flexible lenses) Though to be Old Age (that’s actually presbyopia) Injuries
14
Correction Glasses Contact Lenses Lens Positive
