2 BATTLE OF YORK April 27, 1813- The Americans capture the Canadian capital and burn and loot the city British officer goes behind American troops and blows up ship’s magazine- killing 38 (Zeb Pike) and wounding 200+ Allows Americans to supply Lake Erie, British get revenge at D.C

3 BATTLE OF LAKE ERIE (PUT-IN-BAY)- SEPTEMBER 10, 1813 Oliver Hazard Perry fights from the Lawrence where 4/5 of his crew is killed. He rows to the Niagara under heavy fire and defeats the British there Accepts surrender back on the Lawrence Significance- US gains control of Lake Erie, gains confidence and morale with major naval victory

5 BURNING OF WASHINGTON D.C- AUGUST 24, 1814 British decide to destroy American morale and burn D.C Win battle of Bladensburg and they have a clear path to White House Dolly Madison stays around to save artifacts The British burn all government buildings except the Patent Building They should have gone to Baltimore and this only strengthens America’s resolve

6 BATTLE OF BALTIMORE/SIEGE OF FORT MCHENRY- SEPTEMBER 15, 1814 The British attack by land and sea and are unsuccessful in both The delay caused by invading D.C. allows the Americans to fortify. They sink ships to block Fort McHenry Francis Scott Key writes poem that later becomes Star Spangled Banner The British realize that they can’t control East Coast and they may need to negotiate peace

8 BATTLE OF HORSESHOE BEND- MARCH 27, 1814 Andrew Jackson fights with lower Creeks and Cherokees against the Upper Creeks (Red Sticks) Jackson wins and makes creeks sign Treat of Fort Jackson which opens up Alabama and part of present day Georgia Junaluska saves Jackson’s life and is later sent on Trail of Tears. Jackson gains notoriety and gains more power in military- on his way to New Orleans.

9 BATTLE OF NEW ORLEANS- JANUARY 18 TH, 1815 British forces close to 10,000 lose to Jackson’s force of 4,000 which included Pirates, free blacks, slaves, and Indians British attack plan fails when fog lifts and Americans have clear shots Americans think this is the decisive battle and Jackson becomes a huge war hero (even though it happens after treaty. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=90uEEGHGSnU
