Social Learning 9.3 Baylis

Social Learning 2 Types  Cognitive & Modeling

Cognitive Learning Focuses on how info is obtained, processed, & organized Think of: Mental Process Examples: Latent Learning (not immediately) & Learned Helplessness

Latent Learning & Cognitive Maps Edward Tolman (1930’s) & The Rat Maze Shortest Path to Food = Cognitive Map of maze developed by rats Latent Learning- not demonstrated immediately Learning occurs in absence of reinforcer

For example: Have you ever gone somewhere new in town? Without using your GPS you use directions your friend gives you to a meeting spot. You see places you have driven by before. Little did you know you learned some details without intending to do so.

Learned Helplessness General learning strategies can affect a person’s relationship to the environment If you experience that your actions have no effect  Learned Helplessness or laziness Basically – if you believe its uncontrollable you wont try.

Learned Helplessness & Depression Martin Seligman Helplessness is a major cause of depression Helplessness will lead to: 1. stop trying 2. lower concept of self 3. feel depressed

Modeling Observation & imitation 3 Different Effects 1.No Learning; You simply repeat what you see at the time 2.Observation Learning – imitation to be repeated later (EX: Dance step; Bobo) 3.Disinhibition – You watch someone engage in a threatening activity w/out being “punished” (EX: handle a snake)

Behavior Modification The systematic application of learning principles(CC, OC, SL) to chg. ppls. actions & feelings Uh…? 1.Define the problem in concrete terms 2.Apply learning application We can use these to teach desired behaviors

Computer-Assisted Instruction CAI Based on Operant Conditioning Info is broken down into simpler units called frames Constant reinforcement

Token Economy History: Motivating tool for troubled boys Points given for good behavior that would be cashed in for rewards BOYS improved T.E  ppl “paid” to act good Have improved prisons, mental hospitals, and classrooms

Self-Control Personal system of rewards & punishments How to: 1. concretely define the problem 2. Set up Behavioral Contract with reinforcers

Tips… Reduce the neg. emotions w/ studying STUDY in a new place SQ4R AND PQ4R Survey Question Read Write Recite Review Preview Question Read Reflect Recite Review

How to Improve Your Study Habits STUDY until you start to fidget & lose focus (At this point- Read 1 more page then STOP) Repeat but at the Fidget Point add another pg (So 2 more)  Repeat You will be able to study longer and more efficiently
