1. British Attacks on U.S. ships and Sailors British ships would attack American trading ships Impressment- “pressed” into British Navy. Britain would take any soldiers that sounded like they had a British accent, even if they were Americans!

2. Indian Attacks on the Frontier British in Canada were giving Indians from the frontier guns to fight the Americans There would be no peace until British were totally out of North America.

3. Wanted to add Canada to U.S. If they beat Britain they would get Canada as part of the U.S. Could TRIPLE size of U.S. Congress declared war June 1812

Battle of Lake Erie Captain Oliver Hazard Perry- used James Lawrence's words for inspiration even though they were outnumbered! No boats available so he made them- took control of 6 British Ships He won control of Lake Erie- Why important?

Battle of New Orleans 1815- British Attacked New Orleans Andrew Jackson fought with freed slaves, Indians and pirates! He won! Uncle Sam Samuel Wilson- born 1766 Age 14- enlisted in army War of 1812 he supplied army with meat- stamped barrels with U.S.— meant Uncle Sam 1830s became a national symbol

Andrew Jackson-Backround Born- South Carolina frontier in a log cabin Father died before he was born Age 13 he dropped out of school (8 th grade) and became a messanger for the Continental army with his brother He was captured and kept in a POW camp When he got out of the camp by age 15 his brother and mother died He was an orphan He was an orphan

Andrew Jackson- Growing up Taught himself law- became a lawyer and a judge Moved to Tennessee to become involved in politics there Traveled to New Orleans where he led the battle of New Orleans- made him famous!

Presidency Election of 1828 candidate for Democratic Party (Jeffersonian democrat) Popular because he was a self made man 2 nicknames: People’s President and Old Hickory

Growth of Democracy First election where ALL white men could vote Frontier states were first Thought that if these men faced same dangers and problems as those with land then they should have the same rights Campaigned by holding picnics, parades, dinners, planted hickory sticks because some couldn’t read Twice as many men voted in 1828 than in 1824 Victory for “common man”
