1 5 Project funded by the Euro- Mediterranean Regional Programme for Local Water Management of the European Union DEVELOPMENT OF TOOLS AND GUIDELINES FOR THE PROMOTION OF THE SUSTAINABLE URBAN WASTEWATER TREATMENT AND REUSE IN THE AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION IN THE MEDITERRANEAN COUNTRIES MEDAWARE PROJECT Task 6: Development of a Methodology and a Database for the Control and Monitoring of the Urban Wastewater Treatment Plants (Months 21- 26) The aim of this task is to develop the appropriate tools and a database for the effective control and monitoring of the operation of the wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and to develop relevant guidelines (for sampling, analyses and equipment) to ensure the safe operation of the WWTPs Output: various tools developed and made available to plants operators and competent authorities Task 7: Development of a Multi-criteria User Friendly Software Tool for the Assessment and Valuation of Safe Wastewater Agricultural Reuse (Months 31-42) The tool will guide the responsible authorities in the development and operation of WWTPs where the final effluent will be safely reused, taking into account the geographical, economical and social barriers of the specific area Output: software tool; practical manual for its easy use Task 8: Dissemination Activities (Months 1- 42) A series of training workshops, conferences, etc. will be organized with the aim of capacity building, information and know-how transfer and raise of awareness Output: dissemination of information and raise of awareness Project status: Tasks 1 to 5 were completed; outputs are available on the project website http://147.102.83.100/projects/meda/meda.htm; Task 6 is currently on-going Task 5: Development of Specifications for Urban Wastewater Utilization (Months 21-26) A thorough review of the urban wastewater reuse systems focusing on the reuse in agricultural production will be made with the aim of developing specifications and guidelines for the safe and sustainable reuse of wastewater Output: specifications for the sustainable reuse of urban wastewater in the agricultural production; 2-day training workshop

2 Project partners: EU Partners: Greece, Spain MED Partners: Cyprus, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestinian Authority, Turkey Objectives: Promotion of effective technologies and safe practices for sustainable urban wastewater treatment and reuse (WWTR) in agricultural production Development of specifications for wastewater treatment technologies and systems (including innovative ones) and for urban wastewater utilization Increasing the safe reuse of wastewater in agriculture with the overall objective of water saving, safe effluent disposal, and the protection of environment and public health from the uncontrolled reuse of raw or low quality effluent Supporting the competent authorities and all actors involved in the field of urban WWTR by providing them with tools and methods for the promotion of best practices (tailored to local needs and constraints) in respect to WWTR Project duration: 42 months (May 2003 – October 2006) Project tasks: Task 0: Project Coordination (Months 1-42) Greece is the project coordinator and is responsible of ascertaining the overall progress of the work, consolidating the obtained results, preparing reports, managing dissemination activities, securing communication between partners and communicating with the Commission Output: project website, all reports Task 1: Determination of the Countries Profile (Months 1-6) This task (1) focuses on the identification of the existing situation prevailed in the participating countries in regards to aspects such as geography, climate, demography, water balance (2) examines the water and wastewater management policy, the relevant institutional framework and the socioeconomic tools applied in each country Output: two reports containing all information gathered Task 2: Evaluation of the Existing Situation related to the operation of Urban Wastewater Treatment Plants and the Effluent Disposal Practices with emphasis on the Reuse in the Agricultural Production (Months 5-10) Task 2 focuses on the identification of the existing situation related to the pre-mentioned fields and potential negative impacts caused by non orthodological operation of wastewater treatment, disposal methods and reuse schemes Output: report containing collected information Task 3: Analysis of Best Practices and Success Stories (Months 7-11) This task refers to the collection and analysis of information regarding successfully implemented schemes and practices of urban WWTR in countries in the Mediterranean basin and elsewhere. Visits to selected areas with successful schemes will be organized with representatives of each participating country Output: report containing collected information Task 4: Development of Specifications for Innovative Urban Wastewater Treatment Technologies and Systems (Months 11-21) The aim of this task is to review all urban wastewater technologies, methods and systems including innovative ones which can be adapted to the Mediterranean regional context Output: specifications and information sheets for the applicable urban wastewater treatment technologies; 2-day training workshop
