Compositional Elements of Painting Advanced Humanities

Line Basic building block of visual design Defined by its three physical characteristics: 1. length is greater than width 2. 3. implication of continued direction Lines can be 1. 2.

Form Form - Form is the space created by line. Form cannot be separated from line in two- dimensional design.

Color Three components of color: 1. 2. 3.

Color - Hue Hue = measurable wavelength of a specific color. 3 _____________ Colors 3 ______________ colors –To make a secondary color, you add equal proportions of 2 primary colors ____________ colors are created when you add a primary to a secondary. Color Wheel

Color – Value Value is the relationship of blacks to whites and grays. This range of colors create the value scale. Tint – Shade –

Color - Intensity Intensity is the brightness or dullness of a hue. Adding black or white can change the intensity. Palette -

Mass Mass is the physical volume and density of an object. In 2-D art, mass must be implied. Mass can be implied in 3 ways: 1. 2. 3. Texture –In painting, texture is the roughness or smoothness of the painting. –Is it real?

Repetition The three terms used when discussing repetition are rhythm, harmony, and variation. 1.Rhythm – is the recurrence of elements in a composition Regular rhythm – repeated elements are of the _________ size or importance Irregular rhythm – repeated elements are of differing sizes and/or importance 2.Harmony - Does the repetition ________________________? 3.Variation – How does an artist repeat something, but at the same time change it? (Ex: _____________________)

Balance Balance is the achievement of equilibrium in a work of art. There are two kinds of balance: 1.Symmetrical balance – 2.Asymmetrical balance – Most paintings are asymmetrically balanced. However, some paintings are not balanced at all.

Unity Unity is when all of the elements of composition work together to create meaning. Closed composition – Open composition – Both closed and open compositions oftentimes achieve unity.

Focal Point A focal point is an area that seems to be of greatest visual appeal. In other words, your eye is drawn to that spot. A painting can have... 3 ways that focal points can be created are (but are not limited to): 1. 2. 3.
