Plymouth This lithograph depicts the Pilgrims landing at Plymouth Rock on December 11th, 1620. The Mayflower is shown in the bay as smaller boats bring the settlers in. These brave Pilgrims crossed the ocean to obtain religious freedom on the shores of a New World.

Plymouth “Separatists” wanted to find religious freedom in the New World The Virginia Company granted permission to settle North of Jamestown, but had no money to support them.

Massachusetts Bay Colony Puritans planned better for their colony. They were well equipped and well prepared. Arrived early enough to plant crops. Elected a governor before leaving England John Winthrop had a clear vision for Colony

Massachusetts Bay Colony Colony grew and thrived with help from Winthrop’s planning and the Puritans’ work ethic Basic unit of the Commonwealth – congregation. Each congregation set up own town.
