Causes of Industrialization The 5 M’s
2
DEFINITION Industrialization
Anytime a word ends in “-tion” you know it’s talking about a process Industrialization is the process of starting to use machines and technology to do tasks that used to be done by hand.
3
Machines The first main cause of industrialization is technology.
The Industrial Revolution was a period in history when many new machines were invented. These machines changed the world of work forever.
4
Machines Examples from the Industrial Revolution: Steam engine
Spinning Jenny Cotton gin Railroads Steam ship
5
Manpower (M’people power)
Another main cause of industrialization is PEOPLE (lots and lots of them)… During the Industrial Revolution, the population of Great Britain’s cities grew for two main reasons… Agricultural Revolution Enclosure Movement
6
Manpower (M’people power)
Agricultural revolution Led to a population explosion
7
Manpower (M’people power)
Enclosure movement Many people moved from the countryside into cities This meant that there were more people available to work in factories
8
Materials Materials (or natural resources) are also essential to the successful industrialization of a nation During the Industrial Revolution, Great Britain was lucky to have access to several materials… Coal Iron (used to make Steel)
9
Materials Coal: power source for steam engines
10
Materials Iron: turned into steel steel was used to make machines
11
Money For a country to industrialize, it needs CAPITAL (or, money)
Money is needed in order to pay for new businesses or factories. Great Britain had a number of wealthy inventors and a stable currency.
12
MARKETS are where products are bought & sold
When a nation industrializes, it starts to make lots of new products. The final thing an industrializing nation needs is a place to sell these new products. MARKETS are where products are bought & sold
13
Markets Britain found new markets because…
It had a strong, stable government that supported overseas trade Trade helped because Britain had lots more people to sell things to (sell more, earn more) Also, the Agricultural Revolution & population explosion increased the demand for stuff (more people, more sales)
14
Factors of Production Another way of describing the 5M’s…
Machines, Manpower, Materials, Money & Markets Factors of Production… Land (includes natural resources) Labor Capital Entrepreneurship (ideas)
15
5M’s of Industrialization
Matching! For each of the 5M’s, decide which of the 4 Factors of Production it matches… Factors of Production Land (includes natural resources) Labor Capital Entrepreneurship (ideas) 5M’s of Industrialization Machines Manpower Materials Money Markets

Quiz – Quiz – Trade Everyone starts with a card
Question on the front. Answer on the back. QUIZ: Ask your partner your “quiz” question You read the answer on your card to check/help QUIZ: Your partner asks you his/her question Check/help as necessary TRADE cards, and repeat with a new partner!

Drawing the 5 M’s Draw an image showing what a nation needs in order to industrialize. Be sure to include something that represents or shows all 5 Causes of Industrialization: Machines Manpower Materials Money Markets
