Moon Phases Ms. Twardowski 8 Tan Central Middle School

The moon takes approx. 28 days to orbit the Earth. There are 4 phases of the moon! Each phase lasts about one week (7 days). 7 days x 4 phases = approx. 28 days in a month! The phases are named after HOW MUCH OF THE MOON WE CAN SEE (illumination), and Whether the amount visible is increasing (WAXING) or decreasing (WANING).

Phases of the Moon Phases of the moon as seen from the Northern Hemisphere. (This is where the United States is located)

Phases of the Moon New Moon: the ‘dark’ moon. When the moon passes between the Earth and the Sun and is NOT visible to us. Visible: After sunset

Phases of the Moon First Quarter: half moon. 50% of the moon is visible (the RIGHT side). In this phase the visible part is WAXING (getting bigger). Visible: afternoon and early night. Terminator

Phases of the Moon Full Moon: entire side of the moon, that is facing the Earth, is visible (illuminated by the Sun’s light). Visible: sunset to sunrise (all night long)

Phases of the Moon Last Quarter (3 rd Quarter): half moon. 50% of the moon is visible (the LEFT side). In this phase, the visible part is WANING (getting SMALLER) Visible: late night and morning.

Phases of the Moon Gibbous: When more than 50% of the moon is visible. Crescent: When less than 50% of the moon is visible.

What is a Blue Moon If a FULL MOON comes around TWICE in one month, the second one is called a ‘Blue Moon’.

What causes an eclipse? Solar Eclipse: When the SUN is being blocked by the moon. This puts the moon’s SHADOW somewhere on Earth.

What causes an eclipse? Lunar Eclipse: When the MOON is being blocked, from the Sun’s light, by the Earth. This puts the Earth’s SHADOW somewhere on Moon.
