The Moon

Moon’s shape and size The moon is 3476 km in diameter, just more than ¼ earth’s diameter The moon is egg shaped, with the round end facing the Earth. The moon’s dark spots are called Maria The moon’s crust is approximately 60 km thick.

Phases of the moon As the Moon revolves around the Earth, the moon appears to change shape in the sky. The moon does not actually change shape, but shadows are created giving the moon phases.

Phases of the moon Full Moon Quarter Moon

Crescent Moon Almost New Moon

Making the phases of the moon The moon revolves around the Earth every 27 1/3 days. The Moon is inclined above and below the plane of the Earth and sun by 5 degrees

Making the phases of the moon As the Moon revolves around the Earth, the phases are created by the angle that the Earth views the light from the sun being reflected off the moon.

8 Phases There are 8 phases: 1.New Moon 2.Waxing Crescent 3.Waxing Quarter 4.Waxing Gibbous 5.Full Moon 6.Waning Gibbous 7.Waning Quarter 8.Waning Crescent

Waxing vs. Waning Waxing means getting bigger, waning means getting smaller

Eclipses Two kinds of eclipses 1.Lunar Eclipse 2.Solar Eclipse

Lunar Eclipse A lunar eclipse is when the Moon is in the Earth’s shadow.

Solar Eclipse A Solar Eclipse is when the Earth is in the moon’s shadow. More rare than lunar eclipse. Seen on earth once every 200 years on average.

Parts of an eclipse There are 2 parts of an eclipse 1.Umbra 2.Penumbra

Umbra Umbra is where a total eclipse is occuring A total eclipse is where the object is totally blocked.

Penumbra Penumbra is where a partial eclipse is occuring Partial eclipse are seen by more people. Partial eclipse is where the object is partially blocked.

Moon Facts The moon rotates on its axis at the same rate that it revolves around Earth. Therefore, the same side of the moon is always facing Earth. Nobody knows exactly where the moon came from, possibly from a large object crashing into Earth and sending a glob of lava into outerspace.

Moon Facts continued Rotation is the spinning of an object on its axis. Revolution is the orbit of an object around another object. Eclipses do not occur every month because of the incline of earth’s revolution.

Moon exploration First spacecraft to explore the moon happened in 1959. It was part of the Luna series launched by the former USSR The US also created the Pioneer series which were competing with the Luna series to get to the moon.

Moon exploration The first people to land on the moon were Neil Armstrong and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin in 1969. They were on the Apollo 11 mission.
