15 FACULTY OF HUMAN SCIENCES KEY LEARNING AREA (KLA) REQUIREMENTS There are six Key Learning Areas in the Primary curriculum: - English - Mathematics - Science and Technology - Human Society and Its Environment (HSIE) - Creative Arts - Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE). To meet the BOSTES requirements for teaching in Primary schools in NSW, you must complete a minimum of eight KLA units; Macquarie recommends these be across four or more KLAs. You must include at least one Creative Arts unit AND one PDHPE unit A list of suggested list of KLA units is in the appendix to the Student Guide. Use the worksheet to help you keep track

English and Mathematics 16OFFICE I FACULTY I DEPARTMENT It is strongly recommended that students who did not achieve at least Band 5 in English at the HSC include one of the following units in their program: LING109 Language, Culture and Communication or LING 291 Writing in English It is strongly recommended that students who did not achieve at least Band 5 in Mathematics at the HSC include MATH106 A View of Mathematics in their program.

17FACULTY OF HUMAN SCIENCES THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW: PEOPLE, PLANET, PACE, QUALIFYING MAJOR, CAPSTONE - EXPLAINED!

18FACULTY OF HUMAN SCIENCES PEOPLE AND PLANET UNITS

19FACULTY OF HUMAN SCIENCES PEOPLE AND PLANET UNITS People and Planet units enable students to: -understand the challenges and issues facing the world -develop the capacity to be engaged and ethical local and global citizens. People units are designed to give students an understanding of what it means to live in the social world, and to develop cultural or social literacy. Planet units enable students to develop scientific literacy and to understand what it means to live in the physical world. You are required to include one People unit and one Planet unit in your program of study For double degrees these units need to be completed in two different faculties. Select People and Planet units that are also KLA units; see the Student Guide

20FACULTY OF HUMAN SCIENCES PEOPLE AND PLANET UNITS

21FACULTY OF HUMAN SCIENCES PACE UNITS

22 FACULTY OF HUMAN SCIENCES PACE UNITS Participation and Community Engagement (PACE) units - enhance students' educational experience and work-readiness by offering them opportunities to apply their academic learning to real world situations - assist our local, regional and international partners build their capacity - transform the learning, teaching and research experience at Macquarie to enable us to better contribute to a socially inclusive and sustainable society. The structure of each degree program determines whether completion of PACE unit is a requirement. - BABEd(Prim) EDTE403 and EDTE404 - BA-Psych BEd Prim PSY399

23FACULTY OF HUMAN SCIENCES THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW QUALIFYING MAJOR/PROGRAM OF STUDY

24FACULTY OF HUMAN SCIENCES QUALIFYING MAJOR/PROGRAM OF STUDY Qualifying major: A major (a structured sequence of undergraduate units) that is listed as satisfying the general requirements for a specific program. Programs that allow a choice of the particular subject area to be studied (such as the Bachelor of Arts) require the completion of a qualifying major. Program of study: The minimum sequence of required study which would enable a student to qualify for an award, including both the general requirements of a specific award and the specific requirements of a qualifying major or specialisation where applicable. Also known as: Program

25FACULTY OF HUMAN SCIENCES CAPSTONE UNITS

26 FACULTY OF HUMAN SCIENCES CAPSTONE UNITS Capstone unit -A final year unit of study in an undergraduate degree program which integrates the material presented across a major or program of study. -Capstone units can provide students with opportunities to integrate their knowledge and experiences from their whole program in preparation for the next stage of their career. - BABEd (Prim) Capstone – BA: Education Major EDUC399 Capstone – BEd(Prim): EDTE456 - BA_Psych BEd(Prim) Capstone – BA-Psych: PSY399 Capstone – BEd(Prim): EDTE456

46FACULTY OF HUMAN SCIENCES RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING (RPL)

47FACULTY OF HUMAN SCIENCES RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING (RPL) Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) may be given for recognised studies undertaken elsewhere. When granted, RPL may count towards the credit point requirement for your degree. If you have received unspecified credit you may be able to convert it into Specified Credit (previously known as Exemptions) Students must complete an RPL application. http://mq.edu.au/study/postgraduate/how_to_apply/recognition_of_prior_le arning/

48FACULTY OF HUMAN SCIENCES PLANNING YOUR PROGRAM

49FACULTY OF HUMAN SCIENCES FULL TIME – PART TIME WORKLOAD Full-time student: - A student who is enrolled in units in an academic year which comprise at least 0.75 of an Equivalent Full-Time Study Load for the course for which they are admitted. - Typical full time study Load is 12 credit points per session therefore 0.75 is 18cp. Workload - 1 credit point = 3 hours work per week. A 3 credit point unit will therefore require a minimum study time commitment of 9 hours per week. - Note: Session 3 – is the same workload compressed into 5 weeks!

50FACULTY OF HUMAN SCIENCES BABED (PRIMARY) PLANNING YOUR PROGRAM Suggested f/t recommended program is in the Student Guide If you have RPL, specialised advising may be needed. Select People and Planet units that are also KLAs.

51FACULTY OF HUMAN SCIENCES BABED (PRIMARY) PART TIME Students undertaking a part-time program begin with EDUC105, EDUC106, PSYC104 and PSYC105.
