Bred animals are known as breeds, while bred plants are known as varieties, cultigens, or cultivars.
Traditional artificial selection works by breeding specific phenotypes together. Modern selective breeding utilizes artificial insemination, embryo transfer, cloning and Marker assisted selection (MAS).
