1 Student Affairs Division Meeting September 19, 2012

2 Definitions Of A Strategic Plan  A process or document outlining an organization’s priorities toward which fiscal and human resources will be directed.  A disciplined effort to produce fundamental decisions and actions that shape and guide what an organization is, what it does, why it does it, with a focus on the future. (Bryson, J.M., Einsweiler, J.M., 1987).

4 VALUES Values describe our organizational culture, what is important to us in our work and provide a solid foundation for the organization.  The members of the Division of Student Affairs are in the profession to educate students-intellectually, spiritually, physically, socially, culturally, morally and emotionally.(SMUDSA ethics statements preamble)

5 5 VISION A vision statement describes the future and ideal role for our organization.  Our vision for the next 100 years is for SMU to accelerate dramatically its emergence among the premier private universities in the country. (SMU Strategic Plan)

6 MISSION A Mission Statement summarizes the what, how, and why of an organization’s work.  The Mission of the Division of Student Affairs is to develop, with others in the University, opportunities for students to become productive citizens through the creation of challenging environments that contribute to students’ intellectual, spiritual, physical, social, cultural, moral and emotional growth and in so doing, engage them with the widest range of persons within the University and beyond (SMU Student Affairs)

7 MISSION A Mission Statement summarizes the what, how, and why of an organization’s work.  WHAT: The Mission of the Division of Student Affairs is to develop, with others in the University, opportunities for students to become productive citizens  HOW: through the creation of challenging environments that contribute to students’ intellectual, spiritual, physical, social, cultural, moral and emotional growth and in so doing, engage them with the widest range of persons within the University and beyond  WHY: We do this work in support of SMU’s vision to “shape citizens who contribute to their communities and lead their professions in a global society”

8 GOALS Goals are overarching priorities of the organization.  To enhance the academic quality and stature of the university  To improve teaching and learning  To strengthen scholarly research and creative achievement  To support and sustain student development and quality of life  To broaden global perspectives (SMU Centennial Strategic Plan)

9 Objectives and Strategies  Objectives are the specific efforts to achieve a stated goal. Objectives help break the goal down into more specific pieces.  Strategies are the action steps for meeting each objective.  Goal Four: Objective Three Expansion and strengthening of student leadership development (SMU Centennial Strategic Plan)  Strategy: To identify the interests, needs, and potential for growth for leadership programs offered to/for the campus community. (SMU LCI 06-07 SACS)

10 Student Affairs Strategic Planning Overview SMU creates the Centennial Strategic Plan 2006- 2016 Division of Student Affairs engages in strategic planning discussions beginning in 2007 and identifies its 3 Strategic Planning Pillars Departments identified learning outcomes and assessments related to the Pillars The Division’s Strategic Planning Committee continues to discuss and refine the Strategic Plan.

11 To Support and Sustain the Quality of Life –Pillar 1: Student Success: Focus on Retention –Objective 1: Improve Student Awareness of Campus Support Services »Target: 100% of Student Affairs departments will utilize a marketing plan that promotes to students the programs and services they provide in support of student retention –Objective 2: Provide experiences that allow a connection with SMU through a program and/a person »Target: Within the next 3 years 100% of Student Affairs departments will offer an opportunity for students to connect with the department or a person within the department »Target: Within the next 3 years 100% of Student Affairs departments will identify programs and/or services intended to promote the retention of ethnic minority students.

12 To Support and Sustain the Quality of Life –Pillar 2: Learning Happens Everywhere: Focus on connecting the curricular and co-curricular –Objective 1: Offer curricular and co-curricular activities in conjunction with academic partners, through which experiences outside of the classroom are connected to learning inside of the classroom. »Target: 13/14 of Student Affairs departments (Student Affairs development excepted) will develop and implement an intentional approach to address university life issues that contribute to a students’ intellectual, spiritual, physical, social, cultural, moral and emotional growth.

13 To Support and Sustain the Quality of Life –Pillar 3: Exemplary Division of Student Affairs: Focus on Facilities, Technology, Infrastructure, Staff Development and Training –Objective 1: Create and maintain accessible facilities, technology and infrastructures that support the operationalization of the Student Affairs Mission. »Target: 100% of Student Affairs departments will create a plan to assess the above and identify improvement areas. »Target: Targeted departments will identify funding needs and a fundraising plan for expanding or updating their facilities. –Objective 2: To provide on-going professional development and training for staff. through a program and/a person »Target: 100% of departments will develop a plan that demonstrates support for their professional development and training for staff.

14 Critical Success Factors Have a clear purpose for the plan and involve members of the Division and other stakeholders in its development. Embed the S.A. Strategic Plan within the university strategic plan. Have clear measurable objectives to the Strategic Plan and a process for evaluation of the objectives. Connect strategic plan to budget and performance review process. Be committed to seeing the process through Remember that any strategic planning process is only of value if it can be implemented. (Recite; Remember; Rally Around)

15 Next Steps (SEPT) Reviewed the revised S.P. with LSWAT+1 (SEPT) Troy/Mary are identifying research and best practices related to each Pillar to assist departments in writing learning outcomes and objectives and with their assessment plans. (OCT) LSWAT +1 Meeting: Continued work on writing learning outcomes and objectives and assessment plans. (OCT) Directors and LSWAT+1 will work with their teams on writing learning outcomes and objectives and developing assessment plans. (OCT) Divisional Meeting: Presentation of Assessment Cycle and incorporating the goals of the Strategic Plan into 2012-2013 objectives.
