2 I. The Rights of Colonists A. Colonists in America believed they were still English citizens. B. They expected the same rights as English Citizens

3 II. The Magna Carta A. The English people won the right to be a part of government when King John signed the Magna Carta in 1215. B. This agreement established the idea that: the power of the monarch (king) was Limited Not even the King was above the law.

4 III. The Founding of the Parliament A. In 1265 the Parliament was created. B. The Parliament was made up of representatives from across England. C. These people approved laws and taxes. D. King James II didn’t want to share his power with Parliament so he was kicked off the throne. (This was called the “Glorious Revolution”)

6 IV. The English Bill of Rights A. In 1689, Parliament created the Parliament B. This act said that the power to make laws and impose taxes belonged to the people’s elected representatives in Parliament and to no one else.

7 IV. The English Bill of Rights continued… C. It also included a bill, or list of rights that belonged to the people. D. America later create their own set of laws similar to the English Bill of Rights. Examples: Right to trial by jury, Right to overthrow the King (impeach).
