Sunday, May 15, 2016 Day of Pentecost Holy Communion
2
CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God, the fountain of living water, the rock who gave us birth, our light and our salvation. C: Amen. Let us come into the light, the revealing and healing light of God.
3
God of grace and glory, C: you have brought us through the night of sin into the light of Jesus’ resurrection. Yet our lives are still shadowed by sin. Make us alive in Christ, O God. Make us new as you make all things new. Rescue us from evil and the gloom of sin, renew us in grace, and restore us to living in your holiness, through Jesus Christ, our risen Lord. Amen.
4
Rejoice with all creation around God’s throne! The light of the risen Christ puts to flight all evil deeds, washes away sin, restores innocence to the fallen, casts out hate, brings peace, and humbles earthly pride. Jesus Christ loves you and ☩ frees you from your sins by his blood. To him be glory and dominion forever and ever! C: Amen.
5
PEACE The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you.
6
GATHERING SONG: God of Tempest, God of Whirlwind (Red Hymnal # 400) 1 God of tempest, God of whirlwind, as on Pentecost descend! Drive us out from sheltered comfort; past these walls your people send! Sweep us into costly service, there with Christ to bear the cross, there with Christ to bear the cross!
7
2 God of blazing, God of burning, all that blocks your purpose, purge! Through your church, Christ's living Body, let your flaming Spirit surge! Where deceit conceals injustice, kindle us to speak your truth, kindle us to speak your truth!
8
3 God of earthquake, God of thunder, shake us loose from lethargy! Break the chains of sin asunder, for earth's healing set us free! Crumble walls that still divide us; make us one in Christ our Lord, make us one in Christ our Lord!
9
4 God of passion, God unsleeping, stir in us love's restlessness! Where the people cry in anguish, may we share your heart's distress. Rouse us from content with evil; claim us for your kingdom's work, claim us for your kingdom's work!
10
GREETING The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C: And also with you.
11
KYRIE (Red Hymnal p. 147) In peace, let us pray to the Lord. C: Lord, have mercy. For the peace from above, and for our salvation, let us pray to the Lord. C: Lord, have mercy.
12
For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all, let us pray to the Lord. C: Lord, have mercy.
13
For this holy house, and for all who offer here their worship and praise, let us pray to the Lord. C: Lord, have mercy. Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord. C: Amen.
14
CANTICLE OF PRAISE (Red Hymnal p. 148) This is the feast of victory for our God. Alleluia. C: Worthy is Christ, the Lamb who was slain, whose blood set us free to be people of God.
15
Power and riches and wisdom and strength, and honor and blessing and glory are his. This is the feast of victory for our God. Alleluia. Sing with all the people of God and join in the hymn of all creation: Blessing and honor and glory and might be to God and the Lamb forever. Amen.
16
This is the feast of victory for our God, for the Lamb who was slain has begun his reign. Alleluia. Alleluia.
17
PRAYER OF THE DAY Let us pray. God our creator, the resurrection of your Son offers life to all the peoples of earth. C: By your Holy Spirit, kindle in us the fire of your love, empowering our lives for service and our tongues for praise, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
18
FIRST READING: Acts 2:1-4 A reading from Acts. 1 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting.
19
3 Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
20
PSALM: Psalm 104:24-34, 35b 24 How manifold are your works, O L ORD ! In wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. 25 Yonder is the sea, great and wide, with its swarms too many to number, living things both small and great. 26 There go the ships to and fro, and Leviathan, which you made for the sport of it. 27 All of them look to you to give them their food in due season.
21
28 You give it to them; they gather it; you open your hand, and they are filled with good things. 29 When you hide your face, they are terrified; when you take away their breath, they die and return to their dust. 30 You send forth your Spirit, and they are created; and so you renew the face of the earth. 31 May the glory of the L ORD endure forever; O L ORD, rejoice in all your works.
22
32 You look at the earth and it trembles; you touch the mountains and they smoke. 33 I will sing to the L ORD as long as I live; I will praise my God while I have my being. 34 May these words of mine please God. I will rejoice in the L ORD. 35b Bless the L ORD, O my soul. Hallelujah!
23
SECOND READING: 1 Corinthians 12:1-13 A reading from 1 Corinthians. 1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed. 2 You know that when you were pagans, you were enticed and led astray to idols that could not speak. 3 Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking by the Spirit of God ever says "Let Jesus be cursed!"
24
and no one can say "Jesus is Lord" except by the Holy Spirit. 4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5 and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; 6 and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. 7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.
25
8 To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.
26
11 All these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots to each one individually just as the Spirit chooses. 12 For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. 13 For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body — Jews or Greeks, slaves or free — and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
27
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION - FAITH: Celtic Alleluia (Red Hymnal # 174) Alleluia, alleluia. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION – NORTH NEW HOPE (Red Hymnal p. 151) Alleluia. Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Alleluia.
28
GOSPEL: Mark 1:4-8 The holy gospel according to Mark. C: Glory to you, O Lord.
29
4 John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5 And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan,
30
confessing their sins. 6 Now John was clothed with camel's hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. 7 He proclaimed, "The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. 8 I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit." The gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ.

HYMN OF THE DAY: Spirit of Gentleness (Red Hymnal # 396) Refrain Spirit, Spirit of gentleness, blow through the wilderness calling and free; Spirit, Spirit of restlessness, stir me from placidness, wind, wind on the sea.
34
1 You moved on the waters, you called to the deep, then you coaxed up the mountains from the valleys of sleep; and over the eons you called to each thing: "Awake from your slumbers and rise on your wings.“ Refrain
35
Refrain Spirit, Spirit of gentleness, blow through the wilderness calling and free; Spirit, Spirit of restlessness, stir me from placidness, wind, wind on the sea.
36
2 You swept through the desert, you stung with the sand, and you goaded your people with a law and a land; and when they were blinded with idols and lies, then you spoke through your prophets to open their eyes. Refrain
37
Refrain Spirit, Spirit of gentleness, blow through the wilderness calling and free; Spirit, Spirit of restlessness, stir me from placidness, wind, wind on the sea.
38
3 You sang in a stable, you cried from a hill, then you whispered in silence when the whole world was still; and down in the city you called once again, when you blew through your people on the rush of the wind. Refrain
39
Spirit, Spirit of gentleness, blow through the wilderness calling and free; Spirit, Spirit of restlessness, stir me from placidness, wind, wind on the sea.
40
4 You call from tomorrow, you break ancient schemes. From the bondage of sorrow all the captives dream dreams; our women see visions, our men clear their eyes. With bold new decisions your people arise. Refrain
41
Spirit, Spirit of gentleness, blow through the wilderness calling and free; Spirit, Spirit of restlessness, stir me from placidness, wind, wind on the sea.
42
CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made.
43
For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.
44
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.
46
PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Rooted in the abundant life and love of Christ Jesus, we pray for the life of the church, the lives of people in need, and the life of all creation. ……..Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. We deliver all this into your care, O God, trusting in the work of your Holy Spirit to bring all things into the risen life of Christ our Lord. Amen.
47
OFFERING (Red Hymnal p. 152) Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with your free Spirit.
48
OFFERING PRAYER Blessed are you, O God, ruler of heaven and earth. Day by day you shower us with blessings. C: As you have raised us to new life in Christ, give us glad and generous hearts, ready to praise you and to respond to those in need, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.
49
DIALOGUE (Red Hymnal p. 152) The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise.
50
PREFACE It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ. Fulfilling the promise of the resurrection, you pour out the fire of your Spirit, uniting in one body people of every nation and tongue. And so, with Mary Magdalene and Peter and all the witnesses of the resurrection, with earth and sea and all their creatures, and with angels and archangels, cherubim and seraphim, we praise your name and join their unending hymn:
51
HOLY, HOLY, HOLY (Red Hymnal p. 153) Holy, holy, holy Lord, Lord God of pow’r and might: Heav’n and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
52
THANKSGIVING AT THE TABLE Holy God, Breath of life and Fire of love: with a mighty wind you brought creation into being, and by a pillar of fire you led your people into freedom.
53
We praise you for the gift of your Son, who poured out your Spirit on his disciples of every race and nation. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.
54
Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.
55
Remembering, therefore, his death, resurrection, and the sending of the holy and life- giving Spirit, we await his coming again to renew the face of the earth. Send now your Holy Spirit upon us and upon this meal: anoint us with your gifts of faith,
56
hope, and love, that, with thankful hearts, we may be witnesses to your Son. Through him all glory and honor is yours, Almighty Father, with the Holy Spirit, in your holy Church, both now and forever. Amen
57
LORD’S PRAYER (Red Hymnal p. 154) Lord, remember us in your kingdom and teach us to pray. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.
58
INVITATION TO COMMUNION The table of life is spread before you. Feast on the goodness and mercy of God.
59
PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION We give you thanks, O God, that you make your home with us, bringing heaven to earth in this holy meal. Fill us with your Spirit as we go from here, that we may wipe away tears, tend to those in mourning and pain, seek the healing of the nations, and bring to earth the presence of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.
60
BLESSING The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord’s face shine on you with grace and mercy. The Lord look upon you with favor and ☩ give you peace. Amen.
61
SENDING SONG Holy Spirit, Ever Dwelling (Red Hymnal # 582) 1 Holy Spirit, ever dwelling in the holiest realms of light; Holy Spirit, ever brooding o'er a world of gloom and night; Holy Spirit, ever raising those of earth to thrones on high; living, life-imparting Spirit, you we praise and magnify.
62
2 Holy Spirit, ever living as the church's very life; Holy Spirit, ever striving through us in a ceaseless strife; Holy Spirit, ever forming in the church the mind of Christ: you we praise with endless worship for your gifts and fruits unpriced.
63
3 Holy Spirit, ever working through the church's ministry; quick'ning, strength'ning, and absolving, setting captive sinners free; Holy Spirit, ever binding age to age and soul to soul in communion never ending, you we worship and extol.
64
DISMISSAL Alleluia. Go in peace. Share the good news. C: Thanks be to God. Alleluia.
