CHANCELLORS & PRESIDENTS CHANCELLOR = PM-equivalent… responsible for day-to-day Gov.; usually the leader of the biggest political party in the Reichstag (Parliament)… appointed by the President PRESIDENT = Head of State … appoints Chancellor and controls the Army… meant to stay out of day-to-day Gov. but has the power to rule directly in a crisis (Article 48) PRESIDENT CHANCELLOR 1923-29 – STRESEMAN (People’s Party [R-Wing] – only Chancellor for a few months but most important politician in Ger. these years) 1930-32 – BRUNING (Centre Party) JUN-NOV ‘32 –VON PAPEN (R-wing Independent) DEC ‘32-JAN ‘33 –VON SCHLIECHER (R-wing Ind) 1919-1925 – EBERT (SPD; SOCIALIST) 1925-1934 – HINDENBURG (R-wing Independent)

Message – the alliance between Hitler, Hindenburg & Von Papen is uneasy/“temporary” and will not last. Content – Hitler being carried by Hind. & v. P.; hands on their heads; looks uncomfortable/unstable; v. P. looks unhappy. Context – Hindenburg had just made Hitler Chancellor; didn’t want to (had refused him this job in 1932); Hind & v. P. (vice-Chancellor) believed they could control Hit; Hit was determined to take full power & get rid of v. P especially.

Question type: “How useful is the source in explaining Hitler’s rise to power?” Use CONTENT (what you see) and CONTEXT (what you know). Explain how source IS useful but also WHAT ITS LIMITS ARE (what it doesn’t tell us). Then give your overall view. No source is absolutely useless!! e.g. propaganda sources still tell us how Nazis tried to brainwash people. A large crowd listening to Hitler in 1932. How useful in this source in explaining Hitler’s rise to power? Use the source and your own knowledge to explain your answer. 7 mark source Q
