6.1 Population Growth 1. Demographer – scientists who study human populations. Ex: measuring the rate at which a population is growing 2. Birth rate – the number of live births per 1,000 people in a year 3. Death rate – the number of deaths per 1,000 people in a year 4. Infant mortality rate – the number of infant deaths per 1,000 births

6.2 Population Distribution 5. Population distribution – the spreading of people over an area of land 6. Population density – the number of people per unit of land area

6.3 Migration 7. Migration – the movement of people from one place to another Ex: People coming from Asia to America. 8. Emigrate – means to migrate OUT of a place Ex: People moving out of Asia. 9. Immigrate – to migrate INTO a place. Ex: People moving to America. 10. Push factors – causes of migration that push people to leave their home country.

6.4 Urbanization 12. Urban – areas are cities. Ex: Southaven, Olive Branch, Memphis 13. Rural – areas are settlements in the country. Ex: Nesbit, Potts Camp, Eudora 14. Urbanization – is the movement of people from rural areas to urban areas. Ex: Chinese workers moving into cities in search of jobs
