Key terms affirmative action A policy or program providing advantages for people of a minority group who are seen to have traditionally been discriminated against, with the aim of creating a more egalitarian society through preferential access to education, employment, health care, social welfare, etc. ethnic group A group of people who identify with one another, especially on the basis of racial, cultural, or religious grounds. ethnicity The identity of a group of people having common racial, national, religious, or cultural origins. illegal immigration When a person enters the United States without governmental permission and in violation of the United States Nationality Law, or stayed beyond the termination date of a visa, also in violation of the law. immigration The act of immigrating; the passing or coming into a country for the purpose of permanent residence.
