1 Mrs. Gaines’ Second Grade Welcome to our classroom!

2 Welcome to Second Grade! I am so glad that you were all able to attend today. I feel so lucky to be a part of such a wonderful school and I can’t wait to get to know you and your children a little better!

3 All About Me  My background  I graduated from Southeastern Louisiana University. I have a B.S. in Teaching and Learning for grades 1-5.  My experience  This is my fifth year to teach.  I taught Kindergarten and First Grade at Audubon Elementary in Baton Rouge, then First Grade at Lewis Vincent Elementary, and this is my third year at Juban Parc Elementary.

4 My Family  I have been married four years. My husband’s name is John.  We live in Baton Rouge.  We have a son, named Jackson. He is seven months old. We also have one dog named Chewy.

5 My Goals  To give your child the academic and social skills he/she needs to progress to second grade.  To provide a supportive and fun classroom environment.  To help your child make new friends and discover new interests.

8 Reading  Our reading time is about two hours consisting of whole group and small group instruction.

9 Whole Group Instruction  During whole group instruction, I introduce topics to be discussed for the day.  The story for the week  Spelling words  Robust Vocabulary  Sight Words  Phonics

10 Small Group Instruction  At “workstations”, students complete activities which give further practice on skills learned for the week. Phonics Robust Vocabulary Leveled Readers Spelling Listening Seatwork Matching Games and puzzles.

11 What does the teacher do while the students are working?  While the students are working at their workstations, I will pull small groups, according to reading ability to provide individualized instruction based on the needs of those students. We work on Oral Reading Fluency and retelling.  We will focus on leveled readers and high frequency words. I will provide interventions for your child based on needs observed in the classroom..

12 Language/Grammar  Capitalization, punctuation, word order, sentence structure, nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc…  We will have daily writing in our journal, which may include sentence correction, or reading response.

13 Math  Students will learn addition and subtractions facts to sums of 20 with automaticity. They will be able to work problems on paper to sums of 100.

14 Science  Science will be covered in the second half of the school year.  We will learn lots of fun and exciting things in science!

15 Social Studies  Social Studies will be covered during the first half of the school year.  We will discuss rules, citizenship, different cultures and communities, national symbols, etc…

16 Music and Art  We will have music or art everyday. We will use our imagination and creativity to make beautiful works of art to bring home to our family.

17 Classroom Community  Our classroom is a community. In our community, we have rules to help us get along with each other.  Our class rules are:  Follow directions the first time given.  Raise your hand to speak.  Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself.  Respect yourself and others.  Be a great friend!

18 Homework  Your child will have a “Daily Homework Folder” which will be used for special notes and homework.  In the folder, you will find a Homework Sheet and a daily Behavior Chart.  Please review all papers and take out those on the side labeled “Keep at Home.”

19 Graded Papers Folder  Graded Papers folder will go home each week.  It will contain papers from the previous week. Please sign and return the next day.  If there are any D or F papers, please sign and place on the Return to School side.

20 Behavior  We have a new school wide behavior system this year.  Check Behavior Chart in Homework Folder every day. Praise good behavior! If your child’s behavior chart is marked, discuss the behavior and how it can be improved.  Rewards are given at school for students following rules. (Treasure chest, Jag Jewels, Stickers, etc…)  Consequences may include: Loss of recess time, loss of special privileges, notes home, etc…

21 Other Notes  Transportation: Please send a note or call if your child is to go home a different way.  Money: Please make sure your child’s name and phone number are on all checks sent to school.  Scholastic: I will send home Scholastic book orders each month. It is a great way to get affordable books for your child. We can also get books for our classroom : )

22 Conferences  Conferences can be scheduled with me for 8:00 a.m.  I have duty on Tuesdays and Grade Level Meetings on __________. I can not meet on these days.  Please call the office, send a note or email 665-4079 ashley.gaines@lpsb.org
