www.jpiamr.eu Antibiotic resistance: ”One of the three Greatest Threats to Public Health“
3
www.jpiamr.eu With the current spread of antimicrobial resistance we need to invest in research. For example, US funding into AMR research is almost 16 times lower than funding available for cancer research.
4
www.jpiamr.eu WHY JPIAMR? -Few new drugs being developed - Excessive use of antibiotics - Increasing number of resistant strains In Tanzania, Antibiotic Resistance has decreased the rate of survival from neonatal gram-negative infections to 20 compared to 70% previously - Great societal burden and cost Extra health-care costs and productivity losses of at least 1.5 billion EURO per year - AMR research in Europe is fragmented
5
www.jpiamr.eu JPIAMR’S ADDED VALUE ALIGNS INTERNATIONAL RESOURCES TO ENABLE JOINT ACTIONS IN AREAS OF UNMET NEEDS ALLOWS FUNDING POT TO CREATE LARGER POT PROVIDES NETWORKING OPPORTUNITIES SHARED COMMON STRATEGIC RESEARCH AGENDA TO ALIGN NATIONAL PRIORITIES AND COORDINATED ACTIONS COLLABORATIVE PLATFORM TO TAKE THE AMR COMBAT FROM AWARENESS TO ACTION SUPPORTING INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH AND FACILITATING ITS TRANSLATION TO INDUSTRY AND POLICY
6
www.jpiamr.eu WORKING TOGETHER 22 countries to date have joined forces to define a common vision, a strategic research agenda and joint planning as well as implementation of national research programmes
7
www.jpiamr.eu STRATEGIC RESEARCH AGENDA (SRA) ONE HEALTH TO BRING TOGETHER ALL PLAYERS IN THE FIELD FOR A MULTI-DIMENSIONAL APPROACH TO PROVIDE A PLATFORM FOR PARTNERS TO COLLABORATE IN A TAILOR-MADE FASHION ON SPECIFIC TOPICS TO DRAFT FUTURE RESEARCH PROGRAMMES A FRAMEWORK TO BEGIN JOINT ACTIONS A FRAMEWORK FOR CREATING AN EXTENSIVE TRANS-EUROPEAN WORK PROGRAMME ON AMR TO FORM A COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH TO REDUCE THE AMR BURDEN
8
www.jpiamr.eu SRA – UNITING UNDER ONE STRATEGY 1. Development of novel antibiotics and alternatives for antibiotics - from basic research to the market. 2. Design strategies to improve treatment and prevention of infections by developing new diagnostics. 3. Standardisation and extension of surveillance systems to establish a global surveillance programme on antibiotic resistance and antibiotic use. 4. To understand the Transmission dynamics and to develop evidence-based strategies to minimise the spread of resistance 5. The role of the environment as a source for the selection and spread. 6. Designing and testing interventions to prevent acquisition, transmission and infection caused by AMR.

14
www.jpiamr.eu JPIAMR’s First Joint Call (launched January 2014) Focus of CallInnovaResistance: Innovative approaches to address antibacterial resistance Number of countries 12 Total funding 13,8M€ awarded 8,2M€ Funding term 3 years (2014-15 to 2017-18) Number of applications 40 Number of projects funded 7 Notes Largest global initiative on AMR to date Nominated projects cover areas within prevention of infection, treatment (therapy) development, drug development, target identification for antibacterial drug development, and pharmacokinetics
15
www.jpiamr.eu JPIAMR’s Second Joint Call (launched May 2015) Focus of Call Repurposing of neglected antibiotics and characterizing antibiotics or antibiotic and nonantibiotic combinations Number of countries 9 Total funding 9,65M€ awarded 4,45M€ Funding term Up to 3 years, starting late 2015/early 2016 Number of applications 16 Number of projects funded 3 Notes Goal is to sustain defense against AMR by reviving Neglected and Disused Antibiotics (ND-AB), designing combinations of ND-AB and antibiotic and also designing combinations of ND-AB and non-antibiotic in order to reduce occurrence of resistance or overcome established resistance.
16
www.jpiamr.eu JPIAMR’s Third Joint Call Focus of CallTransmission Dynamics: To understand the acquisition, persistence/retention and transmission of resistance organisms and resistance genes Number of countries17 Total funding 35 M € Funding term3 years (2016-17 to 2019-20) Number of applications83 and over 400 groups Number of projects fundedNone yet Topic Research investigates the selection of resistance and its transmission within and between human and non-human sources; the success of clones, organisms, and resistance patterns and the role of genetic elements; and the fitness of the resistant bacteria in clinical, community, veterinary, and environmental settings. Proposals Chair for the review panels on May 12/13 and September 20/21: Prof. Colin Hill, Ireland, and about 70 reviewers will be asked for written evaluations.
17
www.jpiamr.eu JPIAMR’s Fourth Joint Call (to be launched 18 April 2016) Focus of CallNetworking Programs Number of countries10 (TBC) Total funding Up to 50K € per network Funding term Maximum of 1 year (funding begins late 2016) Number of applicationsNone yet Number of teams funded None yet Notes A rapid-action call for leading scientists in the field to establish research networks that will develop guidelines and/or best practice frameworks. Supported networks will provide outputs within a short timeframe (6-12 months). Funding will serve to host a meeting to bring together research groups to create guidelines/white paper in the field of AMR (Canada plans to host a meeting)
18
www.jpiamr.eu ACTIVITIES ALIGNMENT OF RESEARCH PLANS - AT NATIONAL LEVEL FOR 2015/2016: - Mapping National Plans - Support in developing national AMR plans - Mapping Research Programmes -Aligning national plans/programmes with the SRA -At least one national event promoting the SRA among the divers funding organisations in each country -Setting up national mirror groups - Identifying areas around the SRA to synchronise / align national calls
