2 www.wateraid.org One in ten people live without access to safe water – around 783 million people. 2,000 children die every day from water-related diseases. On average, people in developing countries use just 10 litres of water a day – Americans use 400 litres of water a day. WaterAid/Layton Thompson Living without safe water

3 www.wateraid.org 2.5 billion people worldwide live without a toilet. Poor sanitation deprives women of privacy and exposes them to the risk of attack. Diarrhoea kills more children every year than AIDS, malaria and measles combined – it’s the second biggest killer of children under five worldwide. WaterAid/Abir Abdullah Living without a toilet

4 www.wateraid.org Hand-washing with soap can reduce the incidence of diarrhoea by up to 47%. Water, sanitation and hygiene combined can reduce deaths from diarrhoeal diseases by an average of 65%. One gram of human faeces can contain 10,000,000 viruses, 1,000,000 bacteria, 1,000 parasite cysts, 100 parasite eggs. WaterAid/Juthika Howlader Hygiene matters

5 www.wateraid.org For every dollar invested in water and sanitation, $4 is returned in increased productivity. 443 million school days are lost each year due to water-related diseases. 40 billion working hours are lost each year in Africa to time spent carrying water.
