Terms to know  Alliteration- repetition of initial consonant sounds.  Assonance- repetition of vowel sounds  Hyperbole- overstatement  Simile- a comparison using like or as  Metaphor- a comparison without using like or as  Connotation- the feelings associated with a word or phrase  Situational Irony- when what happens is the opposite of what you expect to happen.

3. Skills to have  If you do not know the meaning of a word- LOOK IT UP!!!!!!!!!!  Reading an image- Look at the image. Think of 5 words that come to mind when you look at it. Then think of 5 things it reminds you of. Then look back at the question and see where your ideas and the answer choices overlap.

4. Question #9 will be an Academic Short Answer  How to write an academic short answer:  First, restate the question and answer it in your own words.  Then, use a quote to support your answer.  Finally, make a connection between your words and the author’s words.

5. #10 will ask about the historical and cultural context:  This poem was written during the Victorian Era in the United States. (1800’s)  The Civil War  Industrial Revolution  Society was austere and stoic (harsh, somber, not emotional)  High value on manners and certain ways of doing things  Extremely polite
