Luke- Who is Jesus? Centurion – Jesus; the One with Authority Widow/son – God has visited us in Jesus J.B. – You will be blessed if you don’t fall away on account of me. Jesus anointed – Set free; Unable to do it on our own.

8 After this, Jesus traveled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve were with him, 2 and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene) from whom seven demons had come out; 3 Joanna the wife of Chuza, the manager of Herod’s household; Susanna; and many others. These women were helping to support them out of their own means.

After this, Jesus traveled about from one town and village to another KJV - “And it came to pass afterward” = Luke 1:3 – “orderly account” Kathexes – in sequence, orderly. Used 5x in N.T. all by Luke.

proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. What is the Gospel? What is the Kingdom? Psalm 103:19 - The L ORD has established his throne in heaven, and his kingdom rules over all.

The Twelve were with him, 2 and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: 12 – To be expected This is where the story turns and because of it we need to pay attention to these three verses.

Mary (called Magdalene) from whom seven demons had come out; 3 Joanna the wife of Chuza, the manager of Herod’s household; Susanna; and many others. Not “sinful” woman from last chapter. Any reason to believe that Mary is a prostitute comes from something other than the Bible. Joanna – has some status and wealth. Jesus’ message was reaching high places as well as low.

These women were helping to support them out of their own means. Diakoneó – ministering to. Where we get the word deacon. Meals, Inns, clothes?

Relevant Info: Luke makes parallels with men and women that are unusual for this place and time in history. If names are included it is likely because they were well known. Women were never disciples unless their husbands happened to be a rabbi and willing to have them be a student. It was not uncommon for women to support rabbis out of their own means, but to travel around the countryside with a rabbi would have not only been uncommon, it would have been scandalous. Remember John the Baptist? “ Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.”

1 Corinthians 15 Now, brothers and sisters, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. 2 By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain. 3 For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5 and that he appeared to Cephas, and then to the Twelve.
