INTRODUCTION THE CHALLENGE The Challenge: “Games, Camera, Action!” With the 2016 Olympics around the corner, BBC is looking for a youth TV production company to develop a special show to accompany the Olympics and you have been invited to pitch. RE-CAP!

INTRODUCTION THE CHALLENGE As a Team you must… – Assign roles – Decide what the objective of your TV show is –Develop an overview of your proposed show RE-CAP! The Brief: BBC need a concept for 6 episodes, one a week in the build up and during the 19 days of the Olympics and 11 days of Paralympic Games. Days, dates and times are down to your team!

What is Expected of You? You will be guided through five sessions. These will include set tasks, as well as free research time. What you get out of this experience will be determined by what YOU put in. By 31 st May you must submit the following: A five minute video of your team’s pitch to win the TV production contract Your tutor will keep evidence of the work your team produce, which you will add to over the five sessions INTRODUCTION THE CHALLENGE RE-CAP!

Team Discussion: 5 minutes What do you know about 14-19 yr olds? (a lot!!) Mind map your answers as a team What do they watch? What interests them? What do they spend their money on? Which magazines/blo gs do they read? TARGET MARKET GAMES, CAMERA, ACTION!

If your audience took one thing away from watching your show, what would you want it to be? Be specific E.g. A passion to travel the world A motivation to get fit and healthy Aspirations on career options A positive, enjoyable experience To have enjoyed watching a show with their friends or family An admiration for the architecture of Rio TARGET MARKET GAMES, CAMERA, ACTION!

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION! ASSIGN ROLES Your Crew -Research the different roles that make up a TV production crew for your chosen genre. Remember: you are not producing the whole show, but coming up with a detailed pitch of proposed ideas.

DIRECTOR –Directors aren’t only for blockbuster movies. Even chat shows need a director –You must be able to take the original team vision, and make that a final programme –Communication skills to relay the vision to your team. A good eye and being able to see the bigger picture is a must! LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION! ASSIGN ROLES SKILLS CHECK

ASSIGN ROLES COSTUME DESIGNER –In charge of designing, creating and acquiring all costumes for actors/extras/presenters –Your show can make a big impression by the clothes and designs seen on screen –Good eye for design, colour and style. Work well under pressure and be flexible without compromising final quality. Being able to stick to a budget, and enjoying a bit of shopping helps too! SKILLS CHECK

ASSIGN ROLES LOCATION MANAGER –Identify all locations required for your TV production –Organise cast and crew travelling safely to each location, and being in charge on site –Excellent organisational skills, good interpretation of a script/brief, good communication skills with site owners, enjoy working long hours SKILLS CHECK

ASSIGN ROLES PRODUCTION MANAGER –Responsible for production scheduling and budgeting –Ensuring that the production runs smoothly and meets deadlines –Good multi-tasker, well organised, can have your eye on the bigger picture at all times, good problem solving skills SKILLS CHECK

RESPONSIBILITY Consider… Are you catering for only one sector of society? ‘Youth’ is a very broad target market so be sure to consider whether your TV show will appeal to: All areas of society? Different parts of the UK? Different experiences? Different backgrounds? GAMES, CAMERA, ACTION!

RESPONSIBILITY Olympics and Social Responsibility What does ‘social responsibility’ mean to you? GAMES, CAMERA, ACTION! “The idea that companies should embrace its social responsibilities and not be solely focussed on making profits. Social Responsibility entails developing businesses with a positive relationship to the society which they operate in.” www.investopedia.com

RESPONSIBILITY Olympics and Social Responsibility How can the IOC (International Olympic Committee) consider Social Responsibility in Rio 2016? Discuss in teams and write down some key considerations. Think about: The people The places The environment GAMES, CAMERA, ACTION!

RESPONSIBILITY How can you include your local area? Your TV show will have national UK coverage. However, you must also include a local area that your team know well. For example: Documentary: Include a case study of a local sports team Drama: have it set in your area Chat show: Interview a local representative as well as big stars GAMES, CAMERA, ACTION!

RESPONSIBILITY Finally… Commit to being socially responsible What can your company promise in order to maintain good relationships with the people and places affected by your TV production? Who and where may be impacted by your production? Write down three commitments that show you to be a considerate company GAMES, CAMERA, ACTION!
