EDGE™ Final Project Plan Presentation P09001 – RFID Reader & Active Tag Philip Davenport (Industrial and Systems Engineering)

EDGE™ Project Status Update Project Name –RFID Active Reader & Tag Project Number –P09001 Project Family –Assistive Device Family of Projects Track –Bioengineering Track Start Term –2009-2 planned academic quarter for MSD1 End Term –2009-3 planned academic quarter for MSD2 Faculty Guide –Dr. Fei Hu (Computer Engineering Dept) confirmed Faculty Consultant –Dr. Phillips (EE dept) Primary Customer –This project is being funded by the U.S. National Scientific Foundation, Confirmed

EDGE™ Phase 0: Planning Mission Statement Product Description /Project Overview This product is an RFID reader and active/passive tag for cardiac patients in hospitals and nursing homes. This reader will be integrated with ECG sensor and a wireless RF board. It will relay cardiac vital sign data via the RF board to doctors computer, and databases. It will also monitor patients medicine dosage.. Key Business Goals/Project Deliverables The primary business goals of this product are to  Achieve automatic 24 hour cardiac patient monitoring  Reduce labor and house care costs  Insure correct dosage of medicine is received by patients Primary Market /Project Opportunities The primary market for this device will be Hospitals, specifically cardiac patients Secondary Market /Project Opportunities Secondary markets for these device will be nursing homes. Constraints and Assumptions This project will have a budget of $1,000 Stakeholders Stakeholders in the design of our product include the following: The ultimate consumers, Cardiac Patients Medical staff such as Doctors and Nurses U.S. National Scientific Foundation RIT Faculty member and students working on the project The family members of cardiac patients

EDGE™ 100 M RFID TAG ECG Sensor RFID Reader Wireless RF Board Integrate these devices into one 50 cm Data transmitted via wireless RF board

EDGE™ Phase 1: Concept Development Identify Customer Needs - Interviews Primary Customer(s) Dr. Fei Hu (faculty guide for this project) – I conducted three separate interviews to establish needs and other misc part of PRP Past Graduate Design Team(s) Mike Lewis (Computer Engineer) – Mike is a graduate student currently working on designing an RFID Reader. He has given me access to all work when applicable to this project.

EDGE™ Phase 1: Concept Development Identify Customer Needs - Interpret Needs Statements: 1.The RFID reader software must adhere to the HIPAA Privacy Rule to protect against patient privacy (must create appropriate security schemes) 2.The RFID reader hardware must integrate both ECG Sensors and a Wireless RF Board. 3.The reader must be lightweight since it is located somewhere on or near the patient. 4.The range between the reader and the tag must be adequate to determine if a patient has taken his/her medication. 5.The data collected by the ECG sensors and RFID reader must be transmitted to the doctors computers via the wireless RF board. 6.Design an energy efficient wireless hub-to-hub communication protocol.

EDGE™ Graphical Interpretation Affinity Diagram Light weight Safe Connect to database Long lasting inexpensive Security software Adequate Range Safely transmit data Easy to use Small durable Privacy Act Protect Patient Information Hub-to-Hub Integrate with RF Board Integrated with ECG

EDGE™ Affinity Diagram Light weight Safe Connect to database Long lasting inexpensive Security software Safely transmit data Easy to use Small durable Transmit Data Security Schemes Privacy Act Protect Patient Information Reader and Tag Product Characteristics Integrated with RF board Integrated with ECG Sensors Adequate Range Hub-to-Hub

EDGE™ Needs Hierarchy Transmit Cardiac Data –Transmit data via wireless RF board –Integrate with current ECG Sensors –Integrate with current Wireless RF Board –Connect with doctors database must connect hub-to-hub through each Wireless RF Board –Database should be easy to use Medical Staff must be able to easily find and interpret patient data –Must have adequate range from reader to tag Range must be set to ensure patient has taken his/her medicine Have appropriate Security Schemes –Adhere to the HIPAA Privacy Rule –Protect Patient Information Reader Physical Characteristics –Lightweight Device must be less than.5 pounds –Durable Must be able to withstand a drop on the floor –Inexpensive Each patient will need one, so it must be inexpensive –Must have a long battery life
