Daily Science Question 2/26 Write the Question In new houses, heating systems are often built right into the structure of the house itself. Which of the following is the best place for a heating system in a house? a)the floor, because heat rises b)the ceiling, because heat falls c)the walls, because the more surface covered, the more heat given off d)the doors, because the best place to add heat is where the heat gets lost

Agenda Opening: – DSQ and Standards Review – Essential Question and Objective Work Session: – Convection, Conduction, Radiation Lab Stations Closing: – Find Someone Who…

Daily Science Question 2/29 Write the Question In new houses, heating systems are often built right into the structure of the house itself. Which of the following is the best place for a heating system in a house? a)the floor, because heat rises b)the ceiling, because heat falls c)the walls, because the more surface covered, the more heat given off d)the doors, because the best place to add heat is where the heat gets lost

ENERGY S8P2. Students will be familiar with the forms and transformations of energy. a.Explain energy transformation in terms of the Law of Conservation of Energy. b.Explain the relationship between potential and kinetic energy. c.Compare and contrast the different forms of energy (heat, light, electricity, mechanical motion, sound) and their characteristics.

Essential Question/Objective Essential Question How would describe the differences between temperature, thermal energy and heat? Objective/I CAN By Wednesday, I can illustrate, organize, and argue the differences between temperature, thermal energy and heat.

Lab Folder on the folder First and Last name Homeroom Lab Folder Place eight sheets of notebook paper inside the folder. Each sheet is for a lab station.

Work Session (60 minutes) Heat Transfer Lab Stations Students will rotate to 8 lab stations to build a foundation of knowledge on conduction, convection and radiation. 1.Read It (Read a prompt on heat, answer questions) 2.Watch It ( Watch video and answer prompt) 3.Explore it (hands on activity using scientific method) 4.Illustrate it (draw your interpretation) 5.Organize it ( Heat foldable) 6.Write it (answer several writing prompts) 7.Research it ( experimental design) 8.Assess it ( quiz yourself)

Closing: Write the Question (10 minutes) List and define the ways heat is transferred: 1. 2. 3.

Agenda Opening: Laser Presentations Work Session: Security System Design Closing: Post- Activity Assessment

Work Session: Construct it (2 days) Students will not create and test their prototype security system for Spirit Creek’s Mummified Troll. You will need to draw out and measure your design (length, width, and depth of system) You will need to create an infomercial explaining your security system, why it is the most reliable and cost effective.

Post Assessment Activity 1.Why did you select the type of laser you used in your security system design? 2.What other technologies might make use of the laser you have used in this design? 3.If you were to change roles and act as the thief, how could you outsmart your design? 4.What is the purpose of the trip sensor? 5.If you were a mechanical engineer building this system on a life-size scale using a metal frame, what type of machinery would provide the most accurate cuts? 6.As an engineer, it is important to consider the safety of the system you have created; could anyone be harmed once your system is implemented ?

What is Energy? In science, energy is the ability to do work. Work is done when a force causes an object to move in the direction of the force.

The Law of Conservation of Energy Energy CANNOT be created or destroyed, but it CAN change forms.

Types of Energy There are 2 main types of energy: Potential Energy and Kinetic Energy **************************************** All forms of energy fall into one of these two categories.

There Are Seven Major Forms of Energy

Thermal Energy Thermal energy is all of the kinetic energy due to random motion of the particles that make up an object. Heat is thermal energy.

Also known as light energy.

Thermal Energy or Heat Heat is energy that moves from an object at a higher temperature to an object at a lower temperature.

REMEMBER…the less molecules (mass) in a given space (or volume) the less dense it will be. Density=mass/volume

Conduction Conduction is the transfer of thermal energy from one substance to another through direct contact.

Convection Convection is the transfer of thermal energy by the movement of a liquid or a gas.

Some Examples of Convection Radiator Heater C onvection Oven Ocean Currents

Heat Rises!

Convection Currents The vertical movement of air or liquid currents due to temperature variations.

Example of Convection in Nature Tempest in a Teapot: How Convection Brews a Storm - YouTube

Radiation Radiation is the transfer of energy by electromagnetic waves, such as visible light and infrared waves.

The Electromagnetic Spectrum
