15 Healthy Living (Health Coaching) Program Supplement manufacturing business near med school Each Student paired with 12-15 employees to function as health coaches, focus on healthy lifestyle changes. 6 week summer program – followed by bimonthly 1:1 meetings during MS2 year until March. Summer: Weekly meetings – Alternate between –Small group interactive educational sessions –1:1 meeting: focus individual goals –Each 2 weeks had theme topic: Nutrition, Exercise, Stress mgt Faculty present for group sessions and paired 1:1 mtgs

16 Healthy Living Program Program continued after summer: bimonthly meetings through fall, winter to sustain healthy lifestyle changes. Information tracked on tablet computers via secure IRB approved process –Baseline / Final healthy lifestyle habits –Baseline / Final Biometrics: BP, Weight, Waist/Hip circumference –Individual Employee health goals and action plans

30 Program Evolution (Fall 2014) Integrate content of elective course into core medical school curriculum over 1 st and 2 nd years. (Under discussion) Expand “workstudy” health coaching opportunities to more students during academic year.

31 Highlights and Caveats Positive impact on employee healthy lifestyle changes –Formed strong relationship students Effective use MI skills and wellness knowledge by students (Our opinion): this set of skills and knowledge essential to MD training for future Don’t underestimate logistical support needs Affirm at least 6-9 months coaching support to sustain lifestyle changes Importance of employer leadership support
