Survey for the West Indian Manatee at Naval Station Guantánamo Bay, Cuba Daniel H. Slone, James P. Reid, Susan M. Butler, Robert K. Bonde, Margaret E. Hunter, W. Judson Kenworthy* U.S. Geological Survey, Wetland and Aquatic Research Center, Sirenia Project, Gainesville, FL *101 Pivers Island, Beaufort, NC

West Indian Manatee (Trichechus manatus) - Tropical herbivorous marine mammal - Marine and riverine freshwater habitats

Midwest Florida Manatee Research Project, Xavier University Sirenian Species Ranges

USFWS Range of the West Indian Manatee

Study Area

Puerto Rico: Naval Station Roosevelt Roads 1992

Guamá - calf rescued summer 2012 at NS Guántanamo Bay

1)Benthic Habitat Mapping and Assessment Identify and map potential manatee foraging, resting and fresh water access areas. Characterize the distribution, abundance and health of tropical seagrass communities and assess for their potential use by manatees. 2) Manatee Capture and Radio Tracking Initiate capture of wild manatees, conduct health/genetic assessments, and apply radio tags with follow-up monitoring. Objectives

Team Coordinators: Spotting - Dan Slone, Susan Butler Capture Boat - Jim Reid, Susan Butler Land-based Netting - Bob Bonde, Dan Slone Health Assessment - Bob Bonde, Maggie Hunter Habitat - Jud Kenworthy, Dan Slone

Monitoring – Radio Tags

Remote monitoring via Argos satellite link GPS locations relayed as sensor data through Service Argos Accurate locations (less than 10m) Frequent fix (15-30 minutes) Temperature and dive data Scaled battery life (6-9 month life) Data stored for download Satellite Tracking

54,778 GPS locations received

47,436 locations in study area

Windward Coves and Guantánamo River were most-visited locations

Movement analysis delineates habitat use

Each manatee showed distinct preferences

Each manatee visited the Guantánamo River for fresh water, but schedules varied

Fresh water access

Resting Areas

Intersection of manatee movements and seagrass habitat

Featured in The Wire three times – also Radio GTMO and other media on base plus school and scouting outreach

Thank you to Department of the Navy, NAVFAC SE, NS Guantánamo Bay, Crystal River NWR and all the USGS and base volunteers!
