ANNIE LEIBOVITZ
2
“Born Anna-Lou Leibovitz, on October 2, 1949, in Waterbury, Connecticut. She was one of the six children born to Sam, an Air Force lieutenant, and Marilyn Leibovitz, a modern dance instructor. In 1967, Leibovitz enrolled at the San Francisco Art Institute, where (although initially studying painting) she developed a love for photography. After living briefly on an Israeli kibbutz, Leibovitz returned to the U.S., in 1970, and applied for a job with the start-up rock music magazine Rolling Stone. Impressed with Leibovitz’s portfolio, editor Jann Wenner offered her a job as a staff photographer. Within two years, the 23-year-old Leibovitz was promoted to chief photographer - a title she would hold for the next 10 years. Her position with the magazine afforded her the opportunity to accompany the Rolling Stones band on their 1975 international tour. While with Rolling Stone, Leibovitz developed her trademark technique, which involved the use of bold primary colors and surprising poses. Wenner has credited her with making many Rolling Stone covers collector's items, most notably an issue that featured a nude John Lennon curled around his fully clothed wife, Yoko Ono. Taken on December 8, 1980, Leibovitz’s photo of the former Beatle was shot just hours before his death. In 1983, Leibovitz left Rolling Stone and began working for the entertainment magazine Vanity Fair. With a wider array of subjects, Leibovitz’s photographs for Vanity Fair ranged from presidents to literary icons to teen heartthrobs. To date, a number of Vanity Fair covers have featured Leibovitz’s stunning - and often controversial - portraits of celebrities. Demi Moore (very pregnant and very nude) and Whoopi Goldberg (half- submerged in a bathtub of milk) are among the most remembered actresses to grace the cover in recent years. Known for her ability to make her sitters become physically involved in her work, one of Leibovitz’s most famous portraits is of the late artist Keith Haring, who painted himself like one of his canvases for the photo. As busy as ever, Annie Leibovitz continues to be in demand as portrait photographer, often capturing arresting images of today’s celebrities.” ABOUT Source of information

This photograph is a portrait, close up as it only features Meryl Streep from the chest up. We can see that this pictures was taken with a fast shutter speed to catch the action of her hair blowing in the wind. This image also has a broad depth of field as we can see that the entire frame is in focus. Meryl Streep has been positioned in the middle of the frame therefore this is a centralised image as opposed to a tilted image or following the rule of thirds. The point of interest in this image in Meryl Streep’s face as her arms are acting as leading lines up to her face. Her mime-like makeup is also responsible for her being the point of interest in the photo, as well as the fact that she is using direct address which immediately draws the audience’s eyes up to hers. The image seems to have an average contrast as it's fairly bright but all of the colours seem to look more natural as opposed to being extremely vivid and bright. I would assume that this picture has been taken in a studio and has therefore been taken with artificial studio lighting to brighten things up a bit more. The costumes that she is wearing helps to bring everything together as it matches her face paint and give the pictures a well co-ordinated look.

This photograph is a landscape, mid-shot as Leonardo DiCaprio has been featured from the waist up. This image also seems to have been taken with what seems to be natural lighting as it’s not bright enough to have been captured with a flash/artificial lighting. The photograph has a narrow depth of field as Leonardo DiCaprio is in focus however his surroundings are not. This image has also been framed so that it follows the rule of thirds as he is off to the right and rested on two golden points. The picture also has a high contrast as the dark parts of the photograph are very dark and the lighter areas are very bright. The point of interest in this image is Leonardo DiCaprio’s face as the swans neck being draped around his neck acts as a leading line that draws your eyes upward to his face. Furthermore the outfit worn in this photograph is very plain as it again stop the audience from getting distracted from the point of interest. It also helps to keep the image nice and simplistic. He is also using direct address as he's looking directly at the audience, therefore drawing you straight to his eyes.

This photograph is a landscape, long shot that has been taken with ambient lighting. The picture also has a broad depth of field as the entire background is visible to the audience and not blurry. It has been framed so that it follows the rule of thirds as Kirsten Dunst and Jason Schwartzman are both positioned on the golden points and neither of them are in the center of the image. This picture appears to have a high contrast as the colours are very vivid, even the pastel shades. This picture was taken as publicity for the film ‘Marie Antoinette’ therefore the costumes and makeup are very representative of the characters and the time in which the film took place. The image also looks as though it may have been taken with a slightly faster shutter speed than normal to help catch the movement of the costumes (dress/cape) in the breeze.

This photograph is a landscape, longshot as the full length of Angelina Jolie and her son are in the pictures as well as some of the background. This picture was most likely taken with some kind of artificial lighting as it is so high definition however we can see some bright light coming in from the right side from what I assume is the window. The colour scheme used in this image is very natural, only really sticking to grey, cream and gold, this is continued through both of their outfits as well as the background. This image has a broad depth of field as it is all in focus for us to see. It is also a centralised photo as both Angelina and her son are in the center of the shot. The main point of interest in this image is mostly Angelina as she is making eye contact with the audience but her son is a point of interest too as both of their arms and legs act as leading lines.
