2 Teaching for Exam success Unit 1 Areas to explore: Objective items Short data reponse / stimulus and short ‘explain’ questions Data stimulus and extended writing for Section B Perhaps the biggest difference compared to the current AS, is the longer 15 mark Section B, part ‘b’ extended writing

4 Teaching for Exam success Unit 1 Section A: Data Stimulus questions (1-3 marks) Expect relatively simple resources. Wide range possible including: Maps / charts Graphs Tables of data Photographs / images Cartoons EXAMS SKILLS SET Careful observation of the resource Standing back: looking for patterns, trends and anomalies Direct use of resource in answer Need to be rapid.

6 Teaching for Exam success Unit 1 Section A: longer explanation questions (4-5 marks) Towards the end of the sequence of sub- questions within a Section A question, answers will become a little more extended There is a shift to reasons/ explanation within 4-5 mark, short questions. This is the top of the incline of difficulty within section A Some questions will move off the resource
