BLOOD COMPATIBILITY
2
TESTING FOR COMPATIBILITY
DETERMINING BLOOD TYPES OF DONOR AND RECIPIENT. CROSS-MATCHING: MIXING DONOR’S RBC’S WITH RECIPIENT’S PLASMA (ANTIBODIES). recipient
3
“CROSS-REACTION” MIXING OF INCOMPATIBLE BLOOD TYPES.
AGGLUTINATION (CLUMPING) OR HEMOLYSIS OF RBC’S POSSIBLE PATIENT DEATH FROM “TRANSFUSION REACTION”
4
WHAT BLOOD TYPES CAN BE MIXED?
*LAB 12-2: BLOOD COMPATIBILITY DONOR RECIPIENT_____________ A B AB O A B AB O
5
SUMMARY A O AB B DONATE TO RECEIVE FROM TYPE O = UNIV. DONOR
TYPE AB = UNIV. RECIPIENT
6
GUIDELINES FOR DONATING BLOOD
MINIMUM 17 YEARS OLD WEIGH > 110 LBS HEMOGLOBIN > 12 g/100 mL GENERAL GOOD HEALTH: A. NEGATIVE FOR HIV OR AIDS B. BLOOD PRESSURE < 180/100 C. NO HEART PROBLEMS > 6 MONTHS. D. IMMUNIZATIONS > 28 DAYS E. HEPATITIS OR JAUNDICE > AGE 11 F. FOREIGN TRAVEL (MALARIA COUNTRY) > 12 MO. G. PREGNANCY: > 6 MONTHS AFTER DELIVERY H. TRANSFUSION > 6 MONTHS I. TATTOOS > 1 YEAR
7
Rh INCOMPATIBILITY IN GENERAL: Rh (-) CAN GIVE TO Rh(+) , BUT NOT Rh (+) Rh (-) BABIES DEVELOP ERYTHROBLASTOSIS FETALIS : MOM = Rh (-) & BABY = Rh (+).
8
ERYTHROBLASTOSIS FETALIS
MOM’S Rh ANTIBODIES EXPOSED TO BABY’S Rh(+) ANTIGENS DURING PREGNANCY OR AT TIME OF BIRTH. 2. MOM’S IMMUNE SYSTEM PRODUCES ANTIBODIES AGAINST Rh(+) ANTIGENS.
9
3. ON 2ND + PREGNANCY, MOM’S ANTIBODIES
CROSS PLACENTA & ATTACK BABY’S CELLS ANEMIA 4. PREVENTION: INJECTING Rh(-) MOM WITH ANTIBODIES (RhoGAM) DURING PREGNANCY AND/OR WITHIN 72 HRS OF DELIVERY 5. INACTIVATION OF BABY’S Rh (+) ANTIGENS
