Water Challenge Game: Resource Pack This resource pack is for the ‘Water Challenge Game’, which is delivered in Lesson 2 of the ‘Water Availability in the Hakskeen Pan’ lesson series. Instructions on how to run the game can be found in the ’Water Availability Lesson 2 Teacher Notes’ resource. This pack contains the following: Individual resource lists for Villages A – F (including a description of each village) 6 x blue chance cards (one for each village) 6 x orange chance cards (one for each village) Money templates (in denominations of 50 Rand, the South African currency) 6 x milk bottle templates (one for each village) 6 x maize templates (one for each village)

VILLAGE A Your village has a borehole from which you are able to obtain water. You have enough water for essential use and also to keep a small herd of livestock. When there is enough water, you can grow small amounts of vegetables. Sometimes the borehole dries up so your family stores water in buckets to use in the event of this happening. If the borehole does dry up, there is not enough water to grow vegetables. Village A Provide Village A with a copy of their village description (see below) and the following resources: Blue paper x 3 sheets Yellow paper x 2 sheets Scissors x 2 Pencil/pen x 2 Milk bottle template x 1 Maize template x 1 200 Rand – 4 x 50 Rand
4
VILLAGE B Your village has a very poor water supply, with only enough available for essential use. You are only able to keep livestock by travelling to neighbouring villages with boreholes to collect water. Collecting water takes up time and is physically hard work. Family members collecting the water are only able to carry enough for the livestock so you have no water for growing vegetables. Village B Provide Village B with a copy of their village description (see below) and the following resources: Blue paper x 3 sheets Scissors x 2 Pencil/pen x 2 Milk bottle template x 1 Maize template x 1 200 Rand – 4 x 50 Rand

VILLAGE C Your village’s water source comes from a borehole. In comparison to the other villages in the area, the borehole in your village is reliable. This allows you to keep livestock and grow vegetables. People from other villages often come to your village to use the borehole as their own supplies are very limited. Village C Provide Village C with a copy of their village description (see below) and the following resources: Blue paper x 3 sheets Yellow paper x 2 sheets Scissors x 2 Pencil/pen x 2 Milk bottle template x 1 Maize template x 1 200 Rand – 4 x 50 Rand

VILLAGE D Your village obtains water from a borehole. However, when the water is taken from the borehole it is very high in salt levels; it needs to be treated before it can be used. Removing salt from water can be expensive. Your family are only able to afford to treat water for essential use and for watering your livestock. You are unable to grow vegetables as they do not grow well in high levels of salt. Village D Provide Village A with a copy of their village description (see below) and the following resources: Blue paper x 3 sheets Scissors x 2 Pencil/pen x 2 Milk bottle template x 1 Maize template x 1 200 Rand – 4 x 50 Rand

VILLAGE E The water supply in your village can be irregular – sometimes there is water available, sometimes there is not. Most of the year, you are able to keep livestock. When there is not enough water in the village, you must get it from elsewhere. When there is more water than usual, you try to grow vegetables for extra food. Village E Provide Village E with a copy of their village description (see below) and the following resources: Blue paper x 3 sheets Yellow paper x 1 sheet Scissors x 2 Pencil/pen x 2 Milk bottle template x 1 Maize template x 1 200 Rand – 4 x 50 Rand

VILLAGE F The water supply in your village is very unreliable. During the wet season, it is sometimes possible to obtain water from a borehole. Most of the time, you must find water from elsewhere. It is not possible to grow any vegetables as there is such a lack of water. Your family herds livestock but they will sometimes go without water and aren’t very productive as a result. Village F Provide Village F with a copy of their village description (see below) and the following resources: Blue paper x 2 sheets Scissors x 2 Pencil/pen x 2 Milk bottle template x 1 Maize template x 1 200 Rand – 4 x 50 Rand

CHANCE CARD – Village A Your village’s water borehole has dried up. You are forced to drink water that has been stored in buckets. However, this water is contaminated with cholera and Mother gets sick. Whilst she is sick, she cannot work on the farm. The Mother in your group needs to move away from the group until she is told she is better. She must pay R50 to be treated. CHANCE CARD – Village B Your village only has enough water for essential use (drinking, cooking, washing, etc). To be able to give water to your livestock herd, two female family members need to travel to a neighbouring village. Select two females from your group to collect water. They must bring R50 with them to pay for the water. CHANCE CARD – Village C Although your village has a reliable water borehole, people from villages with less water have been using it. As a result, there is now only enough water for essential use and for livestock watering. The vegetables you usually grow with the extra water fail and you are forced to buy produce instead. You must pay R100 to buy the food needed for your family to survive. CHANCE CARD – Village D The water obtained from your village’s borehole often has levels of salt that can be harmful and so it needs to be treated. The children in your family mistakenly drink water that hasn’t been treated and get sick. They cannot attend school, nor can they help on the family’s farm. The children in the group need to move away from the group until they are told they are better. CHANCE CARD – Village F This year has been particularly dry, with almost no rainfall even in the wet season. There is not enough water to give to your livestock herd and many of them die. Farming is your main source of income so you must buy some more animals. Pay R100 to get more animals so that you can farm again. CHANCE CARD – Village E A lack of water has meant that the vegetables you have tried to grow have died and your animals have not produced any milk or meat. Not only do you have little income, you have no food. You are forced to borrow money from the bank. Pay back the bank R50.

CHANCE CARD The government and the BLOODHOUND SSC team have worked together to implement a water pipeline network in your village. Increased quality and quantity of water means that your livestock herd is more productive so you have more produce to use and sell. CHANCE CARD The government and the BLOODHOUND SSC team have worked together to implement a water pipeline network in your village. The quality of the water is much better than that from the boreholes so the children in your family rarely get sick. Instead, the children are able to go to school, get a good education and eventually get a well-paying job. CHANCE CARD The government and the BLOODHOUND SSC team have worked together to implement a water pipeline network in your village. Your village is now more attractive to tourists who begin to stop and stay on their way to the nearby national parks. Your family opens up a hotel, which is very successful because of the amount of visitors. CHANCE CARD The government and the BLOODHOUND SSC team have worked together to implement a water pipeline network in your village. Women of the family no longer have to travel long distances to collect water. With her extra time, Mother is able to get a job. She becomes a role model for other women in the village, empowering them to increase gender equality in their households. CHANCE CARD The government and the BLOODHOUND SSC team have worked together to implement a water pipeline network in your village. Your family is able to grow fruit and vegetables. This means that you have to spend less money on food. Iit also increases the nutritional content of your diet, ensuring that family members are healthier. CHANCE CARD The government and the BLOODHOUND SSC team have worked together to implement a water pipeline network in your village. With a reliable water supply, the village’s medical clinic is more hygienic and can offer more services. If young children in your family get ill, they can receive better treatment and recover quickly. Pregnant women can also be better looked after.
