Mentoring is a formal or informal relationship involving an experienced person (Mentor) and an inexperienced person (Mentee).¹ Mentors advise and guide Mentees on their path to personal development.¹

A desire to pass along knowledge and experience.¹ Need commitments by mentors and Mentees.¹ Building a good relationship is the key to mentorship.¹

1.Prepare to be a mentor. 2.Share a professional vision – future goals. 3.Be able to communicate – supportiveness. 4.Create a network of support – other mentors. 5.Share information and knowledge.

6.Solve, Resolve, and Evolve – encourage problem solving skills. 7.Consultation skills – Find solutions and ask questions. 8.Have the Mentor consider how they would like to be treated - effective feedback. 9.Strike a balance – Advise and empower them.

Mentors should have a clear expectation of their roles. Mentors need time to mentor. Mentors need to evaluate their mentorship programs.

Learn as much as you can about the goals and priorities of the mentee. Be an advisor and empower the individual. Be approachable. Be honest and do not ignore the individual that you are mentoring.

A mentor has to be invested in the growth and development of a person. Someone who is relational – one on one. Do not ignore the individual that you are mentoring.

A Mentor has to be invested in my growth and development whole heartedly. Both people have to give their time for an effective mentoring relationship to work. Have to have open communication in order to be effective.
