Research Papers: Advice for Next Time Avoid using 1 st & 2 nd person in your writing (no “I”, “Me”, “My”, or “You”). Use only 3 rd person. If you must talk about your opinion directly, say, “It is this writer’s opinion that …) Although, I would use this type of sentence sparingly. Instead of saying “You might think that…”, say “One might think that…”
20
Research Papers: Advice for Next Time Avoid narrative stories in persuasive research papers. Don’t go into a lot of background details about your subject’s life. Instead provide a brief background so your readers know who your subject is and then introduce your thesis statement at the end of the first paragraph. Once you have introduced your thesis statement, everything else must be focused on supporting/proving it directly.
21
Research Papers: Advice for Next Time Use more commentary! Too often the papers had quotes dropped in with no personal commentary explaining what the quote meant or how it proved/supported your thesis statement. Use at least 2 sentences of commentary for every 1 quote (1 quote + 2 commentary sentences = 1 paragraph chunk)
22
Research Papers: Advice for Next Time Follow the MLA format for Works Cited Pages The list must be alphabetized (not numbered) If you need help, use citation makers or Google “Purdue Owl MLA Works Cited” Papers also need a title, double spacing throughout, and your name and class info goes on the top left (not centered or on the right)
