Father was a Cavalry officer and owned a newspaper He was an only child Raised during the Civil War Enjoyed boating, riding, fishing, hunting, and the great outdoors Enjoyed sketching soldiers in uniform

Attended Military School at age 15 Went to Yale Art School for 3 semesters Traveled West many times starting at age 19 Drew pen & ink drawings for magazines

Sketched soldiers, Indians, cowboys and horses Painted and illustrated Wrote short stories and worked for magazines Sculpted clay models / cast them in bronze

Showed people in the East what life was like in the West in the 1800’s Showed the life of Frontier towns and Indians (Native Americans) on Reservations

1888 – Hallgarten Prize 1889 - Silver medal in Paris Exposition Created art for President Teddy Roosevelt
