EXAMPLE OF A PAGE HEADER TODAY’S WEBINAR What’s new with SQL Server 2016 Reporting Services

Introduction Overview of New Features One Portal New Report Builder Mobile Reports Demo How I built the Demo Resources/Caveats Questions Agenda

A little about me: 3 years as a Senior Consultant at Pragmatic Works 12 years at Microsoft including 5 at Microsoft Consulting Supporting MSSQL since it became MSSQL in 1994 When I’m not working, I’m playing with grandkids or my camera! Introduction This is me, just horsing around in Iceland

Why did I pick this topic? I’m not an SSRS developer I don’t write reports Never used Report Manager Because it’s cool!! My customer suggested it Almost complete rewrite of SSRS Lots of new reporting and mobile report features More than “paginated reports” Updated Web Portal KPIs Graphs and Charts Supports IT and Users interacting with data in an organized structure ** Screenshot images courtesy of Microsoft SSRS Team Blog Introduction

Brand new Portal Rewritten to support newer browsers and technologies Updated Report Builder “Traditional” (paginated) reports with an updated look and feel Mobile Reports Reports for a workforce on the move! More than phones, for all devices Mobile Report Publisher Report Designer for Mobile Reports Custom Branding – feature from Datazen Power BI apps for iPhone, Android, and Windows tablets and phones Other new features in Data Security Row level security Dynamic Data Masking Always Encrypted/Transparent Data Encryption So what’s new in SSRS 2016

Single Web-based Portal to support all levels of users Power Users: Design Data models, reports Corporate Data Desktop data External Data Report Builders: Design reports, adds knowledge, add columns/calculations Report Readers: Users that read and contribute to business knowledge using reports and data sets One Portal to rule, er, support them all ;-) Power Users Report Builders Report Readers

Customizable for users or groups, including branding Allows users access to Data Connections Data sets (predefined queries) KPIs Dashboards/Graphs Access can be managed securely Roles Row level security (new in 2016!) Masking technology (new in 2016!) Compatible with IE 10+, Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and even Edge!! No more ActiveX Content in HTML5 Custom Branding One Portal for all data needs

Rewritten Report Builder Report Projects in Visual Studio still exist Report Builder more of a user tool Rewritten to support new technologies HTML5 (no more ActiveX! Supports graphs, charts, dials Newer reporting technologies Gets away from Rows & Columns Gives a “first class experience” in new browser technologies Edge/Internet Explorer 10+ Chrome Firefox Safari New look and feel for traditional reports

Create “modern” reports with more than rows and columns Include Graphs and charts Imbed KPIs’ Still supports “old style” row and column reports Same print and export Develop reports in either new Report Builder or in Visual Studio 2016 New Report Manager

Pin KPIs to Portal for “dashboard” look and feel Also Mobile Reports Allows dynamic definition of KPI Value Goal Status Customize data from various sources Import KPIs from Analysis Server (MDX/Tabular) Build raw data from SQL Server Import data from desktop sources (Excel) Show KPI plus Trend New KPI features

Traditional Reports were usually printed, paginated With SSRS 2016, Microsoft has expanded its commitment to producing more mobile reports and rewrote the whole platform “Mobile reports” doesn’t mean only mobile phones, it means reports for people on the move Mobile Phone Tablets Laptops Even Desktops! Adjusts the content to the orientation of the device and the size of the display FYI – this is all based on Datazen technologies that were purchased earlier in 2015 Mobile Reports in 2016

While technically not a part of SSRS, has a huge impact on reporting Dynamic Data Masking Can finally mask out data fields in a role-based scenario Not a true “security” protection but a way to limit visibility on sensitive fields to lower-privileged users SysAdmin can still see everything Select * into new table unmasks Masking for almost any field DEFAULT() – masks all characters EMAIL() – creates axxxx@xxx.com for an email addressaxxxx@xxx.com PARTIAL() – creates masking with prefix/suffix, like prefixXXXXXsuffix RANDOM() – supports random numbers inside of numeric fields Row level security Transparent Data Encryption/Always Encrypted Combination of feature provides any level of protection for sensitive data without focusing on presentation layer to handle security Data Security in SQL 2016

EXAMPLE OF A PAGE HEADER TODAY’S WEBINAR Demos!!

I created an Azure VM, for SQL Server 2016 CPT3 I added Office 365, SSDT,, SSMS, Report Builder, Mobile Report Publisher I loaded AdventureWork2016CTP3 and AdventureWorksDW2016CTP3 Upgraded SQL Server to 2016 RC1 Added a Tabular Instance What I used to set up the Demo

Resources: Microsoft SSRS team Blog: https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/sqlrsteamblog/ https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/sqlrsteamblog/ MSDN Documentation: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en- us/library/ms170438.aspxhttps://msdn.microsoft.com/en- us/library/ms170438.aspx Bing “SSRS 2016” Caveats and warnings: It’s all still pre-release, things can change Many features are new – expect some issues But remember – early adopters get lots of “love” from Microsoft! Basic Engine features are very reliable and stable Resources and other information

Very exciting new features for SSRS in 2016 Completely re-written for latest technologies Shows commitment from Microsoft to SSRS Branding means you can build your own look and feel Adding new data and report options makes Web Portal more of a “one stop shop” for all user data needs Even novices can get benefit from it This is what grabbed my attention: This portal allows IT to focus on delivering strong data structures, lets users focus on presentation layer and developing new business knowledge Summary

PRAGMATIC WORKS SERVICES Why? As a Microsoft National Systems Integrator, Pragmatic Works has worked with clients small and large, most of whom only leverage a small percentage of their Microsoft SQL Server investment. We realize Microsoft has packed quite a bit into their SQL Server DBMS offering, and most companies either don’t have the resources, expertise, or both to take advantage of all that you have available to you.
