1 My Child has Failed One or More Classes…Now What?!?! Mrs. Soberanis, 9 th Grade Counselor Ms. Mounger, 10 th Grade Counselor Winter 2016 Katella High School

2 What is the Purpose of Today’s Meeting? First semester has ended and your student will be earning one or more “F’s” on his/her report card We want to educate you on what this means for your student and how you can help him/her get back on track Katella High School

3 What Does an “F” Mean? Failing a class means that you child is “credit deficient”, meaning he/she is missing credits In order to graduate with a high school diploma, all students must earn 220 credits o Each class is worth 5 credits, per semester, for a total of 10 credits per year, per class o There is no substitution for failing the following classes. THEY MUST BE REPEATED:  English (4 years required) 40 credits  Math (3 years required) 30 credits  History (3 years required) 30 credits  Science (2 years required) 20 credits  PE (2 years required) 20 credits  Health (1 semester) 5 credits Katella High School

4 Options Options for repeating classes include: o APEX (after-school online classes) o PCHS (online summer school classes) o ACCESS (summer school at an ACCESS site) o Anaheim Achieves After-School classes (done at Katella, after school) Katella High School These options are never guaranteed. First priority goes to seniors, then juniors, then sophomores, then freshmen.

5 Now What???? Second semester is a fresh start o What does this mean? All grades are new Nothing carries over from 1 st semester Monitor student progress o Check Aeries on a regular basis Grades and Attendance go together!!! o Check your student’s planner daily (if there is nothing written in it, ask why) o Communicate with teachers via email or phone Parent Center is available to assist with interpretation Get involved! o Join PTSA o Attend Coffee with the Principal o Participate in Parent Center activities/classes o Look on katellahs.org website for dates and times If you notice any changes in your student and need some assistance, please let us know Katella High School
