2 Simple Sentence A Simple Sentence has only One Clause e.g. 1. The children were laughing. 2. John wanted a new bicycle. 3. All the girls are learning English. Al-Huqail, Eman

3 All clauses in English have at least two parts: a noun phrase and a verb phrase 1. The children were laughing. 2. John wanted a new bicycle. 3. All the girls are learning English. Al-Huqail, Eman

4 But most clauses have more than two parts e.g. John wanted a new bicycle Al-Huqail, Eman

5 The first noun phrase is the subject of the sentence e.g. 1. The children were laughing. 2. John wanted a new bicycle. 3. All the girls are learning English. Al-Huqail, Eman

7 1. Noun + is + Noun: Singular Canada is a country. A cat is an animal. * A is used in front of consonants: e.g. a bed, a cat * An is used in front of vowels: a, e, i, o, u Al-Huqail, Eman

8 2. Noun + are + Noun: Plural Cats are animals. Cats → plural noun Are → plural verb Animals → plural noun Canada and China are countries. Al-Huqail, Eman
