Social Service OR Social Change (Kivel, 2000) Social workers in the buffer zone? Take care of those at the bottom? Keep hope alive? Maintain social control? Who benefits from your work? How do you help people come together?

Reactions to Kivel’s assertion that social work resides in the buffer zone? Do we fulfill the purposes of taking care of those at the bottom? Keeping hope alive? Maintaining social control? Who benefits from your work? Can you make change from inside the “system”? Knowing that social change happens when people get together -what is social work’s role in bringing people together? Critique the assertion that no one the US lives outside the pyramid. Who are you accountable to? Discuss your thoughts about the role of the nonprofit in stabilizing the buffer zone. Learning collectives: Discuss Kivel in collective and then have a large group discussion
