Purpose and action points of the Commission for Extrication and New Technology 8

Tik, Tik,Tik… 9 An commanding officer at the scene has very little time to make sometimes very difficult decisions….! Plan A Risk of fire? Plan B Danger for my people Golden hour where is murphy ? Dangerous Goods ? Need for crucial information!

Purpose commission Providing crucial information “free of charge” for every rescue worker and others !!! Exchange of (international) knowledge; Developing training and course materials; Promoting close cooperation with the various manufacturers, companies and organizations Sending new working item proposals to ISO (International standardization organization) This concerning:  The training manual Vehicle  The training manual Battery  Standardized label for recognition of the power source of a vehicle 10

Purpose commission Sharing extrication methods concerning cars, trucks, busses, trains, airplanes; Developing standard operation procedures concerning this items; Developing courses and training materials in English; Collecting data about alternative energy sources ( full electric, hybrid, CNG, LPG, LNG, Fuel cell, hydrogen direct combustion, and others…); Developing fire fighting measures on this vehicle’s and others…; Tesla EV fire Taxi EV fire

13 Difficulties for the emergency services

Service plug 14 “Service plug” to disconnect high voltage in a hybrid and electric vehicle, is not in a central location, but sometimes placed, where it is difficult accessible for emergency services.

High voltage batteries Difficulties for the emergency services… 15 Difficult access to the battery pack to extinguish with water We can not break open the battery due the electrocution danger! Extinguish battery pack: up to 1 hour!!!

Sufficiently informed? Firefighters battle fire at recycling plant 16 Were the intervention teams sufficiently informed and aware of the present substances and there potential dangers?

Recognition from a distance. Difficulties for the emergency services…. 17 Power source vehicle? No recognition from a distance. Direction overpressure valve unknown Where to positioning intervention vehicles on the safe side? No international standard!!

1001 symbols, indications and different colours … 18

Real life situations… “Truck in the ditch”, was it also gas (CNG,LNG,…) or only diesel drive….? 19

Real life situations … CNG car explodes… Recognition from a distance 20

Real life situations… What kind of power sourse(s) are used or dangers to be aware of ? - Compressed Hydrogen? - Liquefied Hydrogen? - High voltage? - …? 21

Real life situations … Source Mercedes 22

Real life situations … Supercaps…? Leaking acetonitrille… Recognition from a distance! Source Peugeot 23

Real life situations … NASA engineer Heidi Barnes demonstrates the antiquated "broom method" of detecting invisible hydrogen and alcohol fires. 24

25 Promoting close cooperation with the various manufacturers, companies and organizations

Promoting close cooperation with the various manufacturers, companies and organizations 26 Involvement in the development process as external advisor. Taking into account situations “when things will go wrong”. Integrate ability for fast and safe intervention for the first and second responders. Sharing “crucial information” not “HOT” information. International standardized FREE OF CHARGE information. Pro action, don’t wait till it’s to late!!
