AP STUDIO ART EXAM INFORMATION DRAWING PORTFOLIO and 2-D DESIGN PORTFOLIO Section I.: Quality Excellence demonstrated in original artworks…………………5 actual works Quality is evident in the concept, composition, and technical skills of your work. It can be found in very simple works as well as elaborate ones. You must submit actual works in one or more media in this section. They may be separate distinct works, or they may be directly related to one or more of the other works submitted in this section. Flat paper, cardboard, canvas board, or unstretched canvas are acceptable. The work may not be larger than 18”x24”, including matting and mounting. Works that are smaller than 8”x10” should be mounted on sheets that are at least 8”x10”. Works submitted in Section I may also be submitted in digital form in EITHER Section II OR Section III, but NOT both.

Section II. : Breadth A variety of experiences in using the formal, technical, and expressive means available to an artist……………..12 images DRAWING In the Breadth section, you are asked to demonstrate the range of your drawing experiences and accomplishments with a variety of art forms, concepts, and techniques. The work you submit should demonstrate that you are able to pursue advanced drawing concepts, including observation of three-dimensional subjects and work with invented or non- objective forms. The best demonstrations of breadth clearly show experimentation in approach to the work. They do not simply use a variety of media, but combine a range of conceptual approaches and physical means of creating art. It is possible to do this in a single medium or in a variety of media. For this section, you must submit 12 IMAGES OF 12 DIFFERENT WORKS. DETAIL IMAGES MAY NOT BE INCLUDED. You may NOT submit images of the same work that you are submitting for Section II.

2-D DESIGN Breadth in this portfolio refers to your experiences and accomplishments in a variety of two-dimensional art forms, concepts and techniques. Successful works of art require the integration of the elements and principles of design; you are asked to demonstrate that you are actively working with these concepts while thoughtfully composing your art. The work you submit should demonstrate exploration in a variety of media and approaches, inventiveness and the expressive manipulation of form, as well as knowledge of color issues and compositional organization. The best demonstrations of breadth clearly show experimentation in approach to the work. They do not simply use a variety of media, but combine a range of conceptual approaches and physical means of creating art. It is possible to do this using a single medium or in a variety of media. For this section, you must submit 12 IMAGES OF 12 DIFFERENT WORKS. DETAIL IMAGES MAY NOT BE INCLUDED. You may NOT submit images of the same work that you are submitting for Section II.

Section III. : Concentration An in-depth, personal commitment to a particular artistic concern……….12 images In this section, you are asked to demonstrate your personal commitment to a specific visual idea or mode of working. To do this, you should present an aspect of your work or a specific project in which you have invested considerable time, effort, and thought. It is important to define your concentration early in the year so that the work you submit will have the focus and direction required for a concentration. You may NOT submit images of the same work that you are submitting for Section III. Submitting images of the same work for Section II and II may negatively affect your score.

Defining a Concentration A concentration is a body of related works that: Are based on your individual interest in a particular idea expressed visually Are focused on a process of investigation, growth and discovery Show the development of a visual language appropriate for your subject Are unified by an underlying idea that has visual and/or conceptual coherence Grow out of a coherent plan of action or investigation A concentration is NOT: A variety of works produced as solutions to class projects A collection of works with differing intents A group project or collaboration A collection of works derived solely from other people’s photographs A body of work that simply investigates a medium, without a strong underlying visual idea A project that merely takes a long time to complete

Presenting your concentration: All concentrations must be submitted digitally. Twelve images are required; some of them may be details. In most cases, you will probably have completed more than 12 works (Haahhhahahhhhahhhaaa) for your concentration, if so, choose the 12 that best represent your process of investigation. Your choice of images should present your concentration as clearly as possible Commentary: A written commentary describing what your concentration is and how it evolved must accompany the work in this section. Responses should be concise. The commentary is not graded, but it does help in the evaluation process. The commentary consists of responses to the following: Briefly define the nature of your concentration project Briefly describe the development of your concentration and the sources of your ideas. You may refer to specific images as examples. What medium or media did you use.

Advanced Placement Guidelines AP Studio Art is a college level course taught at the high school level. Students receiving a 5, 4, or 3 on their portfolio can receive up to 6 college credits, saving thousands of dollars in tuition. While AP Studio is a lot of work it is also fun and exciting as you will be choosing your own projects! You need time! Limit your after school activities. You MUST put in after school lab time to be successful! Time management will be your biggest challenge. A project is due EVERY TWO WEEKS! Plan long term projects for later submission. Works done in previous art classes may be submitted for Breadth but should be touched up and improved before submission.

Remember – all ideas must be shown to the instructor in sketch form before being started. All projects must be worked on in class. Long term works being done at home must be brought in for approval by the instructor. Once a work of art has been shown at the progress critique it must be completed for the final critique. You are not to start a new project the night before the final critique! Time is quality! Layout and composition are critical! Creative approaches to ideas are essential! STUDENTS NOT TAKING THE EXAM – must still complete all the requirements of the course as that is where your course grade comes from.

CRITIQUES Critiques are held every Tuesday One project is to be completed every two weeks. First critique is to review and justify thumbnails and color experimentations. Students will use the document camera to show the class their thumbnails. The presentation will address: research, subject, content, composition, positive/negative space, color theory and the dominent Elements and Principles of Design. Second critique is the evaluation of your almost completed art work by the instructor and the class. Constructive criticism must provide solutions to any problems being addressed.

The remainder of the second week (Wednesday, Thursday and Friday) is for final touch-ups based on final critique suggestions. Suggestions are based upon the Elements and Principles of Design. Completed project and written assessment are due Friday. Students missing the final critique lose 50 points. These points can be reclaimed during two one hour lab periods after school. Each one hour lab is worth 25 points. Written assessments are to accompany all submissions. Guidelines will be provided. If you are absent on critique day you need to schedule a critique make-up time as soon as you return to school.

Written Assessments For each project: Type, print and SAVE to your Q drive a one page paper addressing the following content: AP Studio Art and your name in the upper right hand corner Interpretation of subject matter, message being told (5) Medium being used (5) Identify the focal point (5) Identify the dominant Elements and Principles of design (5) Identify and describe your artistic influence (master artist) (5) Include an example of their work.

AP Studio Grading Rubric Categories PointsSPTP Preliminary Planning: Thumbnail Drawings 100 An original composition with a minimum of three variations OR one photo with three variations One color rendering Research of a master artist (Name:_____________________________________) for one of the following : o Color Theory and Application o Technique o Artistic Style Composition: 100 Effective use of symmetrical or asymmetrical balance/design Effective use of pattern if the work is an exploration of pattern Effective division of space Strong focal point Creativity 100 Effective use of one or more color schemes Subject matter is rendered from a unique and new perspective Artist takes the viewer on a journey through or around the artwork Degree of Difficulty 50 A minimum of three levels of difficulty are established in all works of art. Examples: Drawing: 2-D Design Creative use of color Effective use of color schemes Development of a strong composition Effective use of the Elements and Principles of Art Demonstrates high level of technical skill with media and/or technique High level of craftsmanship and technical skill Evidence of Research: 50 This reflects the amount of effort put into preparing your work by researching styles and techniques of well known artists or art movements. Time Management: 75 The requirements of both critique sessions were met and work was finished on time Studio hours were utilized Classroom time is used effectively Assessment: 25 Type, SAVE, print and attach a one page paper addressing the following content: o Interpretation of subject matter, message being told o Medium used o Focal point o Dominant Element and Principle of Art o Resource influence (with example of their work) Total Points (will be converted to a percentage grade) 500

Summer Assignments #1: Resource File Your resource file must be completed by the end of the first week in school. It is an important part of your AP program and counts as one half of your first quarter grade. This file is required for permanent placement in AP Studio

CONTENT OF RESOURCE FILE: NATURE (100):30 original creative photographs of nature – close up. Do not submit pictures from the internet or magazines. ARTIST’S WORKS (100): 10 examples of your all time favorite artist along with a short written biography of your chosen artist. VARIETY PACK (100):Examples of ideas that could be applied to Concentration portion of your portfolio: 20 examples are to be original photographs 30 examples may be magazine and internet entries Works of other artists may be used in this section CONCENTRATION (100):10 original photographs. 5 each supporting two different concentration ideas
