1 Essential Questions:  How did the three regions of the British Colonies differ from one another?  What was the main reason behind the colonization of the Southern Colonies?

3 Brainstorm- Why would a person choose to leave their homeland to settle a new land? What resources would a person or group need to resettle in a new land? You have three minutes to complete this.

4 Before Reading:  Read each statement on the anticipation guide and determine if the statement is true or false.  Circle true or false under before reading on the far left side. During Reading:  Cite evidence that either supports your anticipated answer or disproves your anticipated answer.  Cite the sentence and paragraph where you find your evidence.  Fill in the center box.

5 After Reading:  Complete the True/False section on the far right of the anticipation guide.

6  In exactly 20 words (NO MORE, NO LESS), describe which region you think would be the most successful and why.  Share with your partner.  Write and answer the prompt.

7  For this part of the lesson, you will need… 1. Scissors 2. Glue 3. Three Different Colored Pencils/Markers (colors do not matter) 4. Blank Map

8  You will now take notes on the three regions of the 13 Colonies.  Just like North Carolina, in North America, there were three regions consisting of 13 colonies.  After we take notes on each region, you will use the handout/colored pencils to complete your map of the regions and colonies.

These colonists were in search of Religious freedom 1620-Plymouth, Massachusetts Puritans - protestants in England Did not get along with Church of England. Mayflower Compact(document) - the colony’s rules Majority Rule Separation of Church and State-Yeah right, Religion STILL a big deal Intolerant towards other religious views. Economics -Weather and Soil in the North-not ideal More manufacturing, less farming.

12 New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware New England-Religious Freedom Southern Colonies-Economic Colonies Middle Colonies-Mixture of both. New York-settled by the Dutch to make money. Pennsylvania, New Jersey, & Delaware-Religious Colonies- Quakers Quakers- The Quakers (or Religious Society of Friends) is a Christian movement which professes the priesthood of all believers. Pacifists-a person who believes that war and violence are unjustifiable.

13  Using your colored pencil and the map fill out the blank map in your portfolio. Label all colonies.  YOU ARE ONLY COLORING THE MIDDLE COLONIES. THEY ARE 1 COLOR!

15  Jamestown-1607  The Southern colonies make money by growing food- Plantations  African Slaves arrive in Jamestown in 1619  The South is about money and agriculture.  North Carolina-settled by farmers  They grew tobacco and sold forest products like timber and tar  South Carolina was more prosperous  Better land and a good harbor at Charleston

16  Using your colored pencil/Marker, fill out the blank map in your portfolio. Label all colonies.  If the colonies do not fit-Draw a Line and label.  YOU ARE ONLY COLORING THE SOUTHERN COLONIES. THEY ARE 1 COLOR!

19  How did the Middle Colonies reflect both the New England and Southern Colonies?

20  You will now receive a small slip of paper with biographical information about a fictional settler in the Americas.  From this slip of paper you will know your settlers…  Name, Colony, Country of Origin, Short blurb about your settler  Using the above information, you must write a biographical essay on your settler.  Why did he/she move to the colony? What is their profession?  What are some key details about their life based on the region they live in?  You must use the information we learned in class as well as your textbook to fill in the blanks about your settler.  Textbook – American Journey- pages New England Colonies-77-81, Middle Colonies-82-85, Southern Colonies-86-93

22  Using the provided index card, on the blank side write a question related to the colonies we have studied.  Write the answer on the other side (lined).  You will circulate the room until I tell you to stop.  You will then pair up with the person next to you. Each person will ask their question and each will attempt to answer.  You will then exchange cards and circulate again, repeating the same process.
