Brainstorm- Why would a person choose to leave their homeland to settle a new land? What resources would a person or group need to resettle in a new land? You have three minutes to complete this.

You will now take notes on the three regions of the 13 Colonies. Just like North Carolina, in North America, there were three regions consisting of 13 colonies. After we take notes on each region, you will use the handout/colored pencils to complete your map of the regions and colonies.

Economics -Weather and Soil in the North-not ideal More manufacturing, less farming.

New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware New England-Religious Freedom Southern Colonies-Economic Colonies Middle Colonies-Mixture of both. New York-settled by the Dutch to make money. Pennsylvania, New Jersey, & Delaware-Religious Colonies- Quakers Quakers- The Quakers (or Religious Society of Friends) is a Christian movement which professes the priesthood of all believers. Pacifists-a person who believes that war and violence are unjustifiable.

Jamestown-1607 The Southern colonies make money by growing food- Plantations African Slaves arrive in Jamestown in 1619 The South is about money and agriculture. North Carolina-settled by farmers They grew tobacco and sold forest products like timber and tar South Carolina was more prosperous Better land and a good harbor at Charleston

You will now receive a small slip of paper with biographical information about a fictional settler in the Americas. From this slip of paper you will know your settlers… Name, Colony, Country of Origin, Short blurb about your settler Using the above information, you must write a biographical essay on your settler. Why did he/she move to the colony? What is their profession? What are some key details about their life based on the region they live in? You must use the information we learned in class as well as your textbook to fill in the blanks about your settler. Using the provided index card, on the blank side write a question related to the colonies we have studied. Write the answer on the other side (lined). You will circulate the room until I tell you to stop. You will then pair up with the person next to you. Each person will ask their question and each will attempt to answer. You will then exchange cards and circulate again, repeating the same process.
