Warm up: what is conduction? Record an example in your notebook. Activity 60: Ice Preserving Contest
2
Your Energy Conversions Gizmo is due today, including the online questions. Activity 58 UC assessment is due tomorrow before school starts! Gizmo and UC Assessment
3
Our next quiz is going to be on Thursday. You are allowed to make notes on one side of a 3x5 notecard. The quiz is on Activities 58-60. Next Quiz
4
Please open your books to page D39. Activity 60: Ice-Preserving Contest
5
Insulators- materials that are poor conductors and slow down the rate of energy movement. Activity 60: Ice-Preserving Contest
6
With your teammates, design a container that can keep ice frozen for 20 minutes. ◦ You can use any approved materials that you brought but they must be able to fit inside a drink carton. What should be the control for this contest? Activity 60: Ice-Preserving Contest
7
Contest rules: ◦ Your ice cube must remain in the bag until the end of the contest. ◦ Broken bags means you are disqualified. ◦ Keep all water in plastic bag for measuring later. ◦ If any water leaks, you are disqualified. ◦ As soon as time is up, remove the bag and ice and measure your water in the graduated cylinder. Activity 60: Ice-Preserving Contest

Conduction : when thermal or heat energy is transferred from hot to cold because the two objects are touching. Methods of Thermal Energy Transfers: Conduction
9
Convection : when particles with a lot of heat energy move and take the place of particles with less heat energy ◦ Only occurs in liquids and gases since they can move freely. ◦ Convection current: when liquids or gases have a pattern of heating, rising, cooling, and sinking. Methods of Thermal Energy Transfers: Convection
10
Radiation : transfer of thermal energy by electromagnetic waves rather than movement of particles Methods of Thermal Energy Transfers: Radiation

Conduction, convection, and radiation. Twig Video

What did you do to decrease the rate at which your ice melted? How can an insulator or a conductor help make a house more energy efficient? Activity 60: Ice-Preserving Contest
13
Your Activity 58 UC assessment is due tomorrow ! Study and prepare a notecard for the quiz on Thursday. Tonight’s Homework
